Middle School Course offerings

Middle School Curriculum Overview

Students entering the International School of Indiana (ISI) for middle school (grades 6 through 8) will join an academic program rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, engaging with the Middle Years Programme (MYP) during their time in Middle School through Grade 10, before moving on to the Diploma Programme (DP) in Grade 11 and 12.

The IB aims to develop independent thinkers, culturally aware global citizens, and academically strong students. IB students often outperform their peers and are well prepared for top universities.

IB for All

As a non-selective school, ISI supports inclusive access to the IB Diploma. In unique cases, students may pursue only the ISI Diploma, while still participating in IB classes and earning IB course certificates where applicable. Coursework and assessment may be adjusted based on individual learning plans.

 

Grades 6–10: Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Students entering ISI in Middle School will be placed in the IB Middle Years Programme, which builds critical thinking, global awareness, and interdisciplinary learning. These years prepare students for the academic rigor of the IB Diploma Programme in grades 11–12.

  • Adaptable Entry: Students new to the IB may require support in adjusting to the MYP framework. ISI provides guidance and scaffolding to help them engage fully in the program.
  • Assessment: Students are assessed by ISI teachers using IB-aligned criteria. While the MYP does not result in a formal diploma, it is a critical foundation for success in the DP.

Grades 11–12: Diploma Programme (DP)

All students in grades 11–12 follow the IB DP curriculum, one of the most respected pre-university programs in the world. Courses in the DP are two years long, taken over the course of grade 11 and 12.

Certification Options:

  • IB Diploma: Awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization to students who complete all requirements, including external assessments, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service).
  • ISI Diploma: Awarded by ISI to students who complete a full course of study without all external IB requirements. Students can still earn IB course certificates for subjects they complete with IB assessments. Nearly all students graduate with an Indiana Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma, which is awarded through ISI. This diploma meets or exceeds state graduation requirements.
