In Music, students expand their knowledge and understanding of musical art forms through studying musical genres from various cultures including their own. Through engaging in practical music making on various musical instruments students demonstrate the ability to communicate musically and express artistic intentions solo and in small groups. Students are required to critically reflect on their artistic development and processes throughout the learning process and evaluate their work to inform their own artistic processes to benefit future learning. At this level curiosity and initiative are highly encouraged to nurture students’ interest in learning music. 

Students have opportunities to perform each semester in the Winter Arts Concert and the Spring Arts Concert.

Visual Arts focuses on the development of a variety of art-making skills from drawing, painting, and sculpture. Students will develop an introductory understanding of the elements and principles of art, knowledge of art-making techniques, and art movements. An important part of this course is the Visual Arts Process Journal where students will practice art-making techniques, take notes, and reflect on their art making process. This class provides continuous new discoveries and allows for students to begin developing art-making skills. 

Most clubs and activities meet during X Block, the final class period of the day. Clubs meet once a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. This allows students to pursue their interests in multiple clubs without schedule conflicts, and allow students to participate in both clubs and athletics. 

Many of the clubs at ISI allow students to continue to develop skills in the Fine Arts, such as Art Club, Community Band, and Community Choir.

Upper School Students are encouraged to be a part of the after-school theatre programs. In each show, students have opportunities to audition for roles, or sign up to be a part of costumes and makeup design, set design. Rehearsals take place after school. Students also participate as Assistant Directors and Stage Managers, chosen by the theatre teacher based on interest, dedication, and contribution to the theatre department, and must be in grades 9-12. 

• Fall: Musical, combined High School, Middle School, and Grade 5
• Winter: High School Play
• Spring: Middle School Play

All cast and crew are required to submit the Theatre Production Participation Fee, which covers the cost of meals and snacks for extra rehearsals and productions, costumes, props, and set designs. Student directors do not need to submit the Theatre Production Participation Fee. The participation fee for the Upper School Musical is $100, High School Play is $75, and Middle School Play is $100. 

ISI provides all eligible students who attend auditions an opportunity to participate in every production. Cast assignments are determined during the audition process and crew assignments are determined based on discussion with faculty and student directors. 

For each production, there is a contract between the cast, crew, student directors, and faculty directors. These are essential agreements to ensure a smooth rehearsal process for performance, and also hold students accountable for their academic and behavioral standing within ISI. Should this contract be broken, a meeting will be held between the student, faculty directors, and administration regarding involvement in the production. 

Upper School Students are encouraged to participate in Music Ensembles:

• Community Band
• Community Choir
• Jazz Band

There is no cost to participate, and registration will occur directly with the Music & Theater teachers. 

Community members (parents, caretakers, family members, etc.) are also encouraged to join the music ensemble. There will be time allotted for community member participants to attend rehearsals after school. Additionally, those in an ensemble are encouraged to practice individually, as allotted rehearsal times are dedicated for full ensemble rehearsal only. 

New for the 2025-2026 Performing Arts Season

Families can now purchase season ticket subscriptions for theatre productions and arts concerts. Each season ticket package includes one to four tickets per production. Those who require more than four tickets per production may purchase multiple subscriptions.

Season ticket subscriptions are available in limited quantities. Once they are sold out, season tickets will no longer be available. However, single general admission tickets for individual productions will be available for purchase at a later date. 

Season ticket subscription perks include:

• Subscriptions include shows tailored to the performances you plan to attend (theatre productions, arts concerts) 
• Guaranteed tickets for shows selected with first access to selecting preferred seating
• One free drink from concessions when applicable
• A personal thank you note from a cast or crew member, concert performer or emcee, and/or a student director!
