Top 5 Things College Admissions Officers Love About IB Students

ISI High School offers the IB (International Baccalaureate) Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 9 and 10 and the prestigious IB Diploma Programme (DP) for grades 11 and 12.

In High School, students are finishing the final years of the MYP and moving into the DP. Their teachers are all subject area specialists and are trained to help students transition to the MYP, including those who weren’t previously enrolled in IB schools.

The impact of an IB education is well known among top universities. As Marily McGraff Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions at Harvard University, explains:

“IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program on the transcript.”

At the International School of Indiana (ISI), our IB students bring more than high grades; they’re developing the kinds of skills, habits, and mindsets that top colleges deeply value. Here are five key reasons why college admissions officers often favor IB students, backed by research and expert observations.

1. Rigorous Academic Preparation

IB students navigate a demanding curriculum of six subjects, along with core components like the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and the Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS) requirement. Admissions officers view this as a strong indication that students are prepared for the intellectual rigor of college life. ISI students graduate prepared for their next steps. The DP is specifically designed to prepare students for university-level studies, with a strong emphasis on research skills, academic writing, and independent study.

Moreover, IB assessments are externally moderated, which reduces grade inflation and provides a consistent, reliable benchmark that colleges trust. This is why many colleges and universities note in their IB credit policies that they may award up to 30 credits for strong IB exam performance—a full year of college!

2. Strong Critical Thinking & Research Skills

Critical thinking enables students to analyze and objectively assess issues or ideas. It includes identifying problems, collecting and organizing information to build arguments, interpreting data, weighing evidence, recognizing bias, and forming sound conclusions and generalizations. Skills like these are crucial for young learners to be successful in college and beyond.

Through the Personal Project, Extended Essay, and TOK, IB students develop deep analytical thinking, research capabilities, and an ability to make connections across disciplines. These are exactly the kinds of skills that admissions officers look for; not just students who can memorize facts, but those who can question, reason, and reflect.

Research from Oxford’s Department of Education has found that students who participate in the IB curriculum exhibit stronger critical thinking skills than their non-IB peers.

3. Time Management & Self-Motivation

Managing the workload of the IB demands strong organizational skills, perseverance, and self-motivation. These are traits that translate directly into college success. According to the IB, students hone time-management abilities, become self-directed learners, and demonstrate motivation; all qualities that colleges love in applicants.

Academic life at ISI resembles that of a collegiate atmosphere, with major projects designed to reflect the same type of work required of college students. Students also experience a schedule with open blocks to work on projects in common areas, collaborate with peers, and attend teacher office hours for additional support as needed. They are encouraged to take the lead in their learning, acquiring important skills that will help them succeed in both academic and workplace settings.

4. Global Mindedness & Balanced Profile

The IB curriculum fosters an international outlook, intercultural understanding, and empathy. Colleges, especially those with a global focus, value students who demonstrate global citizenship. The IB Learner Profile further supports this by fostering balanced learning environments and shaping students who stand out for their motivation, strong values, and positive attitudes.

Paired with the CAS requirement, which encourages meaningful engagement through service, creativity, and physical activity, IB students develop into well-rounded individuals who are not only academically capable but also collaborative, community-minded, and experienced in leadership.

At ISI, our schedule reinforces this balance. With dedicated time for clubs built directly into the school day, students can explore a wide range of interests while still participating in after-school athletics, arts productions, internships, and travel opportunities. As a result, ISI graduates leave as confident, multifaceted learners with rich experiences that strengthen their college applications.

5. Better College Outcomes & Persistence

One of the most convincing pieces of evidence for admissions officers: IB students tend to persist through college and graduate at higher rates than their non-IB peers, all over the globe. Research by the IB shows that IB diploma students have higher retention and graduation rates than non-IB students, and that IB students are 20 percent more likely to graduate from a university within four years.

IB students graduate high school as responsible and curious individuals, ready to take on the college atmosphere and challenging workload. For example, a study of University of California (UC) system students found that IB entrants earned higher GPAs than matched non-IB students.

Why This Matters for ISI Students

For ISI students considering colleges, your IB diploma isn’t just about earning credentials; it’s a powerful way to show universities that you’re ready to thrive, not just survive, at the next step in your academic journey.

IB students stand out to admissions officers because they bring more than just academic strength; they also demonstrate maturity, a global perspective, and a proven capacity for deep thinking and disciplined work. At ISI, the IB diploma opens doors, not just to colleges, but to rich and meaningful opportunities for growth and learning.
