Last week, the International School of Indiana (ISI) community kicked off the first day of the 2021-2022 school year with an annual tradition, the Bell Ringing Ceremony. The start of a new school year brings a bittersweet feeling to many in our community - the end of summer but the beginning of an exciting, promising new school year. On August 10, those bittersweet feelings affected many in our community as students began their last first day at the 49th Street Building, the longtime home of our Lower School.
Next year, Lower School students will be celebrating the first day of school at the new Chen Family Lower School on the Michigan Road Campus. The completion of the state-of-the-art facility will welcome a new chapter for ISI, one with a unified campus for our community.
On our last first day at 49th Street, the Morrissey family also had their own unique experience. Monica Morrissey, an alumna of the ISI, was in the first graduating class in 2004. Her father, Mack Thomas, attended school in the 49th Street Building in 1951 when it was home to Indianapolis Public School's DeWitt S. Morgan Elementary School. In a full-circle moment for this family, Morrissey's children Macklin and Vivian began their first day at 49th Street, walking the same halls that both their mother and grandfather did so many years ago.
