Taiwan Language & Culture Trip Recap

ISI students traveled across Taiwan, experiencing the perfect blend of vibrant city life, rich history, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

After an overnight journey, the group arrived in Taipei and jumped right into the energy of the city with an evening visit to the lively Ximending District. The next day, students explored Taiwan’s cultural and political history with stops at the Presidential Office and the unique Dingshan Shell Temple, before heading to the mountain town of Jiufen. With its winding streets and scenic views, Jiufen offered a glimpse into Taiwan’s past. The day ended with a stunning view of Taipei 101 lighting up the skyline.

Midweek, the group traveled south to Alishan, where they experienced Taiwan’s natural beauty firsthand. From tea plantations to bamboo forests, students immersed themselves in the region’s landscapes and traditions. An early morning train ride rewarded them with a breathtaking sunrise over Jade Mountain, followed by walks among towering ancient trees and a visit to YuYuPas Cultural Park to learn about the Tsou Indigenous culture.

The journey continued to Tainan, Taiwan’s historic capital. Students explored centuries-old sites like Chihkan Tower and Anping Fort, took a boat ride through the mangrove-lined Sicao Green Tunnel, and wandered through bustling streets filled with local food and art. A visit to a colorful mural village and time at the lively night market gave students a true taste of Taiwanese culture and cuisine.

Additional highlights included visiting the impressive Fo Guang Shan Monastery, creating traditional paper umbrellas in Meinong Folk Village, and exploring the artistic and modern side of Taiwan in Kaohsiung, including the stunning Dome of Light.

The trip concluded back in Taipei with a farewell dinner, celebrating a week of exploration, cultural discovery, and shared experiences. From city streets to mountain peaks, students gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan while creating lasting memories together.
