Grade 8 to 11 Students Spend Eight Days Immersed in Dominican Culture, Service, and Adventure

Travel Experiences at ISI

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who recognize their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet and help create a better and more peaceful world. ISI offers students multiple opportunities to expand their learning and cultural understanding with a variety of trips throughout their time at the school.

Students have opportunities to immerse themselves in different cultures, allowing them to broaden their perspectives and foster empathy and understanding toward people from diverse backgrounds. These trips encourage independence and self-reliance as students navigate unfamiliar environments while reinforcing classroom learning and allowing students to explore their passions. Moreover, ISI trips often involve meaningful community service or volunteer work, instilling a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship.

The 2025 Trip

This spring, students in Grades 8 through 11 traveled to the Dominican Republic for a transformative experience combining cultural immersion, service learning, and outdoor adventure. From exploring the rich history of Santo Domingo to engaging in volunteer work and enjoying the natural beauty of Jarabacoa and Puerto Plata, students had the opportunity to develop global perspectives and make a tangible impact.

Historic Learning
Students began their journey in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo, one of the oldest cities in the New World. With a local tour director leading the way, students explored the Colonial District and several significant landmarks that reflect the country's deep historical roots.

Highlights included:

• Catedral de Santa María la Menor
• Alcázar de Colón
• Ozama Fortress
• Los Tres Ojos National Park
• Museum of Anthropology
• The Malecón waterfront

These historic sites provided insight into the Dominican Republic’s past and diverse cultural influences, offering students a rich context for understanding the country's development.

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences
After leaving Santo Domingo, students traveled to Jarabacoa, nestled in the mountains and known for its natural beauty and agricultural life. There, they gained firsthand knowledge of local ecology and culture, complemented by thrilling outdoor experiences.

Cultural and nature-based activities included:

• A guided nature hike through Jarabacoa’s scenic landscape
• A visit to a butterfly pavilion to learn about native species
• A horseback ride to the stunning Baiguate Waterfall
• A zipline adventure near Cabarete Beach
• Free time to explore and relax at the beach

These experiences not only reinforced environmental science and geography lessons but also encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones and enjoy the natural wonders of the Dominican Republic.

Community Service
A central component of the trip was the opportunity to participate in meaningful volunteer work. Students spent several days working on a community project in Jarabacoa, learning about the region’s agricultural practices and contributing to local initiatives that support sustainability and development.

Service activities included:

• Orientation and training with community leaders
• Hands-on involvement in local volunteer projects
• Reflection and discussion about social responsibility and global citizenship

These service experiences allowed students to connect deeply with the local community, develop empathy, and understand the importance of collaborative action.

This unforgettable experience empowered our students to build relationships, engage in thoughtful service, and explore a vibrant and historically rich part of the world. The trip to the Dominican Republic was a true reflection of the ISI commitment to learning through experience, and it left students with memories and lessons that will last a lifetime.
