Season Recap: High School Volleyball

With the 2020 season canceled due to the pandemic and a large portion of players graduating during that time, the 2021 Gryphons Girls High School Volleyball season was one for rebuilding. With many fresh faces and renewed enthusiasm for the sport, athletes worked together to acquire many match wins and experience small victories as a group.

Improving technical skills, footwork, and good communication on the court was important as the team rebuilt for future years. It was also important to the team to continue to have fun throughout the season.

“Following several of our games I would receive feedback that our girls have great attitudes and that they maintained positive demeanors even when facing adversity,” Coach Danielle Long ‘16, said. “They communicated well with one another and seemed to truly enjoy playing the game. Other people would tell me that our girls hustled and worked very hard. This made me very proud as a coach to know that our hard work in and out of practice did not go unnoticed.”

Experienced players stepped into their roles as leaders by working hard to teach skills to those new to volleyball while balancing their personal goals for growth.

“My biggest goal coming into the season was to become a leader and teach skills to my team,” Grade 12 student Nia Simmons said. “It was a challenge to teach others while also remembering how to play myself after a season off.”

The High School Girls Volleyball team finished the season with a record of 3-12, with improvements throughout the season resulting in a Sectional Runner-Up title.
