Season Recap: High School Varsity Swimming & Diving

The High School Varsity Swimming & Diving Team finished up a successful season, full of personal growth and new school records. In the water, the Gryphons returned to the historic IUPUI Natatorium for practices where the team focused on more race pace training and tempo work as well as advanced their dryland training with morning weights and boxing at ISI.

“This season, the team had its sights on getting ‘one year better,’” Head Coach Brett Stoughton said. “Through everything as minor as each stroke cycle at practice to placings in the State tournament, the Gryphons did just that.”

On the girl's side of the team, multiple graduations from the prior year warranted the need for rebuilding. With three returning swimmers and five newcomers, the ladies were able to match last year’s 9th Sectional placing with broader participation in the Sectional A and B finals at the end of the season compared with last year. Grade 11 student Grace Kaneshiro broke the school record in the 200 IM.

“Some of my biggest goals going into the season were to improve personally and adjust to a new team,” Kaneshiro said. “Breaking the school record was my biggest accomplishment this year. Looking up at the time board and seeing that I got it was just so cool.”

On the boy's side, they started right off where they finished last year, but with six added newcomers. Early in the season the boys started breaking records in-season and defeated both Warren Central and Ben Davis in a tri-meet. At Sectionals, the boys had multiple Sectional A and B final swims, highlighted by multiple school records, and Will Longfellow won the 200 IM.  Due to his win in the 200 IM, Will Longfellow advanced to the State final, where he finished 30th.

Records broken in the season include:

Girls 200 IM - Grace Kaneshiro
Boys 50 Freestyle - Will Longfellow
Boys 100 Backstroke - Will Longfellow
Boys 100 Butterfly - Will Longfellow
Boys 200 Free Relay - Dale Bearden, Konrad Gossweiler, Will Longfellow, Eddie Willis
Boys 200 Medley Relay - Dale Bearden, Konrad Gossweiler, Will Longfellow, Eddie Willis
Boys 400 Free Relay - Dale Bearden, Konrad Gossweiler, Will Longfellow, Eddie Willis
