Season Recap: Grade 5/6 Volleyball

The Grade 5/6 Volleyball team started the season with only two returning players after many of their past teammates moved up to the Grade 7/8 Volleyball team. This opened up opportunities for new grade 5 and even some eager grade 4 players to join the team and have their first experience with ISI Gryphon Athletics.

“My goal for the team was for each player to improve by the end of the season,” Coach Linda Weiss said. “I believe we were successful. The grade 4 players had no experience, and their improvement was wonderful. As the season progressed, you could see the improvement from both our inexperienced players and the returning players.”

The team’s success also allowed them to qualify for the IISL tournament for the first time in several years, where the team won its first round. Players had an opportunity to see their growth in the tournament, having a second chance to play teams that they had encountered earlier in the season.

Moving forward, the team will have many players returning next season, with players already setting goals on how to continue growing as teammates and athletes.

“My biggest goal coming into the season was to learn how to do an underhand serve,” Grade 6 player Anastacia Davis said. “My biggest goal moving forward is to learn how to overhand serve.”

With a small but mighty team, both the Varsity and Middle School Cross Country teams were able to find ways to improve, break records, and have a great time throughout the season. The Cross Country athletes spent their season pushing themselves to gain endurance and speed. Grade 10 runners Ashwin Long and Dennis Lemoine worked hard throughout the season, reached multiple PRs, and made it to regionals and sectionals, respectively.
