Season Recap: Grade 5 & 6 Basketball

The Grade 5 & 6 Basketball Team wrapped up an exciting season defined by growth, resilience, and teamwork. With a mix of experienced players and athletes brand new to the game, the season was about more than wins and losses; it was about building confidence, developing skills, and competing at a high level together.

“Our goal each season is to compete at the highest level and earn a championship banner,” said Coach Timothy Jewell. “One of the primary challenges we faced this year was building the confidence needed to compete consistently against any opponent. While confidence fluctuated during games, the team demonstrated steady growth throughout the season.”

That steady growth became the team’s defining story. As individual skills improved, so did the team’s overall cohesion. Players began to trust themselves and each other more with every practice and game. By the end of the season, every athlete had contributed meaningfully, and every player scored points, a milestone that speaks volumes about the team’s collective effort and development.

Grade 6 student Jordan Howerton came into the season new to basketball with a clear goal in mind. “I was new to basketball, so my goal was to score 20 points by the end of the season,” Jordan shared. “My favorite memory is our first game, where I had no idea what to do yet, but in the end I still scored 4 points!” By season’s end, Jordan had surpassed his goal. “Moving forward, I want to continue to get better at my shooting.”

Grade 5 student Maxwell Schaefer reflected on a powerful team moment. “My favorite memory of the season was watching Isaac get his first points of the season in the final two seconds of the season,” he said. Looking ahead, Maxwell has already set his sights high: “Next year, my goal is to score 50 points in the season.”

Moments like these, first baskets, personal goals achieved, and teammates cheering each other on, defined the spirit of the season. The team’s progress extended beyond the scoreboard. Players grew in confidence, learned to compete with resilience, and strengthened their ability to work together as a unit.

Coach Jewell summed it up best: “Every athlete contributed meaningfully to the success of the ISI 5th and 6th grade team. We are proud of their progress and hope they continue to grow and develop both academically and athletically.”
