Peru Language & Culture Trip Recap

Grades 8 through 10 students traveled to Peru for a week of cultural discovery and hands-on learning. Their journey began in Lima, where they visited the historic Plaza de Armas, surrounded by grand colonial architecture, and stepped inside the San Francisco Church, a stunning example of Spanish Baroque design. A visit to the Larco Museum brought Peru’s ancient past to life, showcasing an extraordinary collection of pre-Columbian art. Later, students explored the lively Miraflores neighborhood, experiencing Lima's modern side, with shops, restaurants, and coastal views.

From there, the group flew to Cuzco, once the capital of the Incan Empire, and continued into the Sacred Valley. In Pisac, students explored a vibrant market and at a ceramics workshop with artist Pablo Seminario, they created their own pieces using traditional techniques, connecting art with history in a meaningful way.

One of the most impactful experiences of the trip was a full-day cultural exchange with the Janaq Chuquibamba indigenous community. Students were welcomed with music and flowers before learning about traditional farming practices and the importance of sustainability in Andean life. They participated in planting crops, prepared a traditional meal using local ingredients, and shared lunch with community members. The day concluded with a “tinka,” a symbolic blessing that honored the cultural exchange and mutual respect between visitors and hosts, leaving a lasting impression on many students.

The group also visited the Maras Salt Mines and the ruins of Ollantaytambo before traveling to Machu Picchu. There, students explored the iconic Incan site with a guided tour, gaining a deeper appreciation for its history and significance.

The final days were spent in Cuzco, where students visited landmarks like Qorikancha, explored local markets, and experienced daily life in the city. Some students opted for an afternoon horseback riding excursion through the surrounding Andean landscape, while others spent time exploring the city center, practicing their Spanish, and sampling local treats like picarones and choclo.

This trip to Peru was more than just travel;7 it was an immersive educational experience that brought history, language, and culture to life. Through exploration, cultural exchange, and shared experiences, students gained a deeper understanding of the world and their place within it.
Opportunities like this reflect the power of experiential learning, helping students build global awareness, empathy, and curiosity that extend far beyond the classroom.
