Middle and High School Students Make an Impact During a Week of Service

During the week of March 9–13, while some students traveled on culture trips, others remained in Indiana to dedicate their time to meaningful service projects that supported local and global communities.

Students visited the warehouse of Changing Footprints, where they helped sort shoes collected during our school drive in February. They learned that the shoes would be sent to communities in Liberia, providing essential footwear to people experiencing extreme poverty. Through this hands-on experience, students saw firsthand how their contributions can make a tangible difference in the lives of others across the globe.

At Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, students participated in two key service projects. For the Food Rescue project, volunteers inspected, sorted, repackaged, and packed donated food items. This critical work ensures the safety and accuracy of the food distributed by Gleaners - nearly 100 million pounds last year. Other students took part in the Food Pantry drive-thru distribution, loading cars with food and directing traffic. Their efforts help serve more than 700 households each day, providing essential support to families throughout the Indianapolis community.

Through these service opportunities, students gained a deeper understanding of the impact of volunteering, the importance of community support, and the value of contributing to both local and global causes. By combining compassion, effort, and teamwork, our Middle and High School students demonstrated that meaningful change starts with action, in our own backyard and beyond.
