Mexico City Language & Culture Trip Recap

Earlier this month, ISI Middle School students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Mexico City, immersing themselves in the rich history, vibrant culture, and dynamic energy of one of the world’s largest and most fascinating cities.

The trip began with students arriving in Mexico City and settling into their new surroundings, quickly getting their first glimpse of a city where ancient traditions and modern life exist side by side.

The following day, students explored the heart of the city on a guided walking tour. Highlights included the remains of Templo Mayor, once the ceremonial center of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán, the bustling Zócalo, and the awe-inspiring Metropolitan Cathedral. In the afternoon, students deepened their understanding of Mexico’s history at the National Museum of Anthropology before stepping into a more hands-on cultural experience, learning the rhythms and movements of salsa during an energetic dance lesson.

Midweek, the group visited the Basilica de Guadalupe, one of the most important religious sites in Mexico, before traveling to the ancient city of Teotihuacán. Walking among the towering Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, students experienced firsthand the scale and mystery of this historic civilization. Later, they tapped into their creativity during a Sacred Heart workshop, crafting traditional folk art alongside local artisans.

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the charming neighborhood of Coyoacán. Students toured the Frida Kahlo Museum, gaining insight into the life and work of one of Mexico’s most iconic artists. The day continued in Xochimilco, where students floated along colorful canals on traditional trajineras, surrounded by music, food, and celebration.

On the final day, students explored two of the city’s most famous markets, Sonora Market and San Juan Market, experiencing the sights, smells, and flavors of local life. The trip concluded with a visit to Chapultepec Park and the stunning Chapultepec Castle, where students took in sweeping views of the city.

Throughout the week, students engaged in hands-on learning, cultural exploration, and meaningful shared experiences. From ancient ruins to modern neighborhoods, the Mexico City trip brought classroom learning to life while creating lasting memories and strengthening connections among students.
