Athletics Recap - May 11th to 17th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Lilliana Sanchez | Girls Varsity Tennis
Lilliana has been a strong competitor and leader for the Gryphons throughout the season. Known for her determination and composure on the court, she has battled through several hard-fought victories and multiple close three-set matches, consistently showing resilience and grit.

On Senior Night, Lilliana delivered one of her best performances of the season, dominating Scecina with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory. Her performance was a fitting showcase of the leadership, consistency, and competitive spirit she has brought to the team throughout her career.

4/11 | Girls Varsity Tennis vs Scecina Memorial High School | 4-1
The Gryphons earned a decisive Senior Night victory over the Crusaders, highlighted by strong performances across the lineup and an exciting finish at doubles. At singles, Veronica Sabau led the way at 1 singles with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win, while Gabby Vergnaud continued her impressive season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at 2 singles. Lilliana Sanchez delivered the most dominant performance of the night, cruising to a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win. The highlight of the evening came at 1 doubles, where Layla Ratliff and Sofia Berzal-Lapuente battled through a thrilling three-set match. After taking the opening set 6-2 and narrowly dropping the second-set tiebreak, the duo regrouped and closed out the match with a decisive 10-3 victory in the third-set super tiebreak. The Gryphons celebrated the win alongside their seniors, making it a memorable night for the team and supporters alike.

4/13 | Varsity Track & Field at Indiana School for the Deaf Invite
The Gryphons turned in a strong showing at the Indiana School for the Deaf Invitational, highlighted by multiple event victories and podium finishes.

Ashwin Long led the boys team with a first-place finish in the 800m and a runner-up finish in the 400m, while Tucker Congrove captured the 110m hurdles title and added a third-place finish in high jump. Josh Christie earned third in the 400m and sixth in the 200m, while Dennis Lemoine placed in both the 200m and 400m. Eric Tang also contributed solid distance performances in the 800m and 1600m.

On the girls side, Sophia White earned runner-up finishes in both the 200m and 400m. Bree Sherrill had an impressive day in the field events, finishing second in discus and fourth in shot put. Maxine McClure-Reynolds and Rebekah Edwards added points for the Gryphons with strong sprint performances, while Mak Woods rounded out the meet in the 400m.

4/14 | Girls Varsity Tennis vs Shortridge High School | 5-0
The Gryphons capped off the regular season with a dominant 5-0 sweep over Shortridge. To celebrate the occasion, the team mixed up the lineup and rose to the challenge across every court. Sofia Berzal-Lapuente stepped into the 1 singles position and battled past a talented senior opponent in an impressive 7-6, 7-5 victory. Layla Ratliff (6-1, 6-0) and Catrina Cristea (6-3, 6-1) cruised at 2 and 3 singles, while Gabby Vergnaud and Veronica Sabau controlled the match at 1 doubles with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win. At 2 doubles, Lilliana Sanchez and Amalia Cristea delivered a pair of double bagels, finishing with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 performance. The Gryphons close out the regular season playing some of their best tennis of the year and carrying strong momentum into postseason play.

4/14 | Boys Varsity Volleyball vs Pike - Sectional | 19-25, 17-25, 18-25
The Gryphons battled hard in the opening round of Sectionals, competing point-for-point with a strong Pike High School squad before falling in three sets. The team showed resilience and determination throughout the match to close out their season.

4/16 | Middle School Track & Field Regional Meet 
The Gryphons competed well at the Middle School Regional Meet, highlighted by an outstanding performance from Beckett Garry, who finished runner-up in the 200m with a time of 24.10 to qualify for the State Championships.

Teddy White also delivered a strong race in the 2400m, finishing 19th with a time of 8:23, while Mira Ozsoy represented ISI in the 400m, placing 25th in 1:10.

The Middle School Track & Field team had an incredibly rewarding season. From the very beginning, one of the primary goals was to build a close-knit group of athletes capable of competing at a high level in both the PAAC and IISL. More importantly, the coaching staff sought to create a team culture built on support, hard work, and shared success. The athletes embraced that vision and did an outstanding job fostering a positive and competitive environment throughout the season.

After entering the season with a young and relatively inexperienced roster, the ISI Gryphons Girls Varsity Tennis team focused on growth, consistency, and building a strong team culture.

As the season came to a close, the Gryphons reflected on a year defined by more than standings and scores. “This season was defined not only by results, but by the friendships, growth, and memories our team created together,” Bougher said. The team's commitment to one another, combined with their on-court development, made the 2026 season one to remember.

The Gryphons Track & Field program took important steps forward during the 2026 season. From athletes setting personal records to strong performances at sectionals and regionals, the team showed steady improvement throughout the year. While injuries presented challenges along the way, the Gryphons remained committed to their goals and continued to compete with determination, making this season another positive chapter in the program's growth.

Timmy Club Supports the ONE Future Campaign

On May 22, members of the school’s Timmy Club and the Boys Varsity Volleyball team hosted a special event in support of the ONE Future Campaign: the Boys Volleyball vs. Alumni & Staff Timmy Game.

The Timmy Club not only organized the event but also made an impressive $1,500 contribution to the campaign. Through the combined efforts of students, staff, alumni, and parents who participated, attended, and donated, the event raised an additional $1,200, expanding the club’s combined impact to $2,700.
