The International School of Indiana (ISI) community greeted this school year with great anticipation because of the return of many activities suspended for health and safety reasons since March of 2020. With COVID-19 safety protocols in place, greatly missed opportunities that enhance the experience in the classroom, such as clubs, interscholastic athletics, and field trips, have resumed. Recently, grade 3 students benefited from the return of these activities when they traveled to Flat Rock Camp in St Paul, Indiana, for a field trip to wrap up the “Who We Are” Primary Years Programme unit of inquiry.
Throughout the year, grade 3 students in all language tracks cover six units of inquiry. The first unit of inquiry, “Who We Are,” helps students learn key concepts in connection, change, and causation. The unit encourages students to explore the nature of self, including different beliefs and values, personal, mental, social, and spiritual health, and human relationships including; families, friends, communities, and cultures.
Students lived out what they learned in the classroom by connecting with their classmates, enjoying a full day outdoors, learning new skills, and spending time together. Grade 3 students enjoyed rock climbing, archery, canoeing, collaboration games, bouncy mats, giant chess games, and more. This experience was a fantastic opportunity for students to bond with their classmates and teachers, and have an exciting day outdoors to wrap up the first month of school.
