Athletics Recap - September 7th to 13th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Leivy Boyd  | Grade 7/8 Soccer
Leivy has led by example all week, encouraging his teammates to stay focused while hustling in both practice and games. His work ethic and determination showed up especially in the games, and he’s been a vocal leader throughout. Very proud of his growth and effort so far, and looking forward to his leadership as one of the captains and his overall performance all season!

9/8 | Grade 5/6 Soccer vs Sycamore School | 1-7
Game was a tough one to swallow after the heavy loss. We had to motivate the players and find ways to improve. There was some good link-up play between Hannah and Grayson. Juan Pablo was amazing, never stopping to run in midfield, make tackles, and win the ball.

9/8 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Greencastle High School | 1-4
The ISI Gryphons put together a strong performance against Greencastle, one of the top teams in Indiana and nationally ranked. Despite the 4–1 result, the team competed well throughout the match and showed that they could play at a high level against a very strong opponent. Greencastle capitalized on a few of our mistakes, but our players continued to compete and create opportunities. Our goal came from Beckett Garry, who reacted quickly to the rebound after Ronan Lien’s shot was saved and finished the chance. Myles Maddox was named our Man of the Match after a complete and composed performance. He consistently made smart decisions, competed hard for every ball, and helped keep the team organized under pressure. His effort and consistency stood out in a challenging game and played an important role in our overall performance.

9/8 | Grade 5/6 A Volleyball vs St Richards | 25-21, 15-25, 9-15
The Lady Gryphons played a competitive match on September 8, winning the first set 25-21 before falling 15-25 and 9-15. The team battled hard throughout the match and showed great effort, narrowly missing the comeback win.

9/8 | Grade 7/8 A Volleyball vs St Richards | 8-25, 16-25
ISI lost to a very talented and experienced St. Richards team. The girls struggled with high quality serving from the dragons. They were able to slowly bounce back during the second set, improving on their passing. The Lady Gryphons will take on Orchard school in the Daneri Gym this Thursday!

9/8 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Purdue Polytechnic North | 25-8, 25-18, 25-17
Varsity bounced back after a tough loss Friday, serving competitively and staying in rallies. They did a nice job of tracking balls in and out of bounds. Junior Ana Cuevas-Faget has made solid improvements in her setting footwork, and ended the night with 7 assists and 6 aces. Kills were well distributed, led by freshman Stephanie Chen with 7, junior Yaretzi Mejia-Guevara with 4, and 2 kills each from Emma Wust Head, Lily Flenniken, and Catrina Cristea. Junior Maya Kalgaonkar finished with a solid 16 digs, 10 service receptions, and only one error. Congratulations to the team on their solid team effort!

9/8 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Purdue Polytechnic North | 25-14, 25-13
JV improved on their communication this match and had some strong serving runs. Sophomore Sophia White served an impressive 8 aces on 18 serves, followed by sophomore Anabel Kim with 4 aces, 3 assists, and 2 kills.

9/9 | Middle School Cross Country vs Orchard School Meet
The ISI Middle School Cross Country teams competed at the Joe Vanegas Cross Country Classic at The Orchard School on Wednesday. The girls were led by Hannah Dollin in 5th place (14:25). Loulou Vetrini also finished in the top 20, taking 19th in 16:10.

9/9 | Grade 5/6 Soccer vs Indianapolis Christian School | 0-1
This was our best game so far! We were missing several players on a field trip, so we had to borrow four from the other middle school team. We dominated the game and created several scoring opportunities, although we missed a couple of chances in front of the goal. Otto controlled the game from midfield with some amazing tackles and pressing, helping us win possession from the opponents. Jose was outstanding in defense, clearing every ball and staying back to prevent counterattacks. Luciana played her first game as a LWF and had several shots on target that were saved. Alex, Kian, and Emilio did a great job tracking back whenever the opponents attempted a counterattack. Overall, the team showed great effort, teamwork, and improvement!

9/9 | Grade 7/8 Soccer vs Indianapolis Christian School | 7-1
The team delivered a very strong performance in their first game after 2 cancellations last week. Goals by Zameer, Fred, Veedant, and Bruno each with one, while the man of the match goes to Leivy Boyd for his hat-trick of 3 goals and excellent play-making all game. The team played excellent passing ball, communicated well, and took shots on goal whenever available. Overall very proud of our start, and we look to continue building on this momentum.

9/10 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Herron High School | 1-4
The Gryphons battled in a series of close matches against an evenly matched Herron team. Potter Chen and Wesley Shattuck both fell in hard-fought matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Coco Waters and Beau Stableford secured a dominant win at No. 1 doubles, with both players showing tremendous hustle, determination, and improvement throughout the match. It was a well-earned victory and a great reflection of how much they continue to grow as a team.

9/10 | Grade 5/6 A Volleyball vs Orchard School | 14-25, 25-21, 15-10
What a great game! The ladies came out slow in the first set, falling 14-25, but bounced back with determination to win the next two sets, 25-21 and 15-10. Their hard work and perseverance were evident throughout the match, especially in their strong serving and continued effort. A fantastic comeback and well-earned win!

9/10 | Grade 7/8 A Volleyball vs Orchard School | 10-25, 25-21, 3-15
Tough serving by a talented Orchard team gave the Lady Gryphons a tough time. The girls were able to recollect themselves and took the second set. Unfortunately, Orchard was able to serve it out in the third set. Constant improvement from our girls is seen game by game. The A team takes on Mooresville Christian Academy next Monday, September 14, at the Daneri Gym!

9/10 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Shortridge High School | 2-1
Last night’s win was a special one as we were missing several regular starters, including our starting goalkeeper, and had players stepping into new positions and making their first starts. Despite the challenges, the team showed tremendous character, competed for every ball, and stayed together from start to finish. Asher Stevens scored both goals, assisted by Saul Gonzalo Sanz and Myles Maddox. Myles was outstanding defensively and showed great composure, work rate, and leadership throughout the game, earning Man of the Match honors. A great example of our team’s depth, resilience, and willingness to step up when needed.

9/10 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Traders Point | 25-12, 25-19, 25-18
It was another strong serving night from the team, keeping Trader's Point out of system often. Junior Catrina Cristea had a great night with 7 kills and 4 aces. Juniors Maya Kalgaonkar and Yaretzi Mejia-Guevara clocked 10 digs each. Ana Cuevas-Faget ended the night with 9 assists and 2 aces. The team stayed in rallies well and found ways to bounce back against tough servers.

9/10 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Traders Point | 16-25, 25-18, 7-15
The team's energy was up and down during the match versus Trader's Point. Notable performances by sophomore Sophia White and senior Sofia Berzal Lapuente, who both have made strides in their defense and hitting in the front row. Sophomore Anabel Kim ended the night with 5 aces, 4 assists, and 2 kills.

9/11 | Grade 5/6 Soccer vs The Oaks Academy | 0-4
The game was a good one, even though we were missing a lot of players and no subs. Macklin was the standout defender with no LWF or RWF getting past him, Grayson, Luciana and Emilio played upfront and were amazing in their first touches and putting pressure on the opposition defense. Players are still working on connecting passes in front of the goal and shooting on target.

9/11 | Grade 7/8 Soccer vs The Oaks Academy | 2-1
This match was a tight and competitive one, with both teams showing grit and effort the whole way through. Leivy Boyd broke the scoring deadlock after halftime with a beautiful assist by Liam Wust-Head, and later Zameer Kaushik had a great cross that landed at a perfectly positioned Otto Kaiser who made it 2-0 at the time. Though Oaks would score one after that we remained defensively intact, and Ben Fischer had a brilliant series of 3 close saves. The man of the match goes to Bruno Gonzalo Sanz for his tireless effort, playmaking, and defensive wins all game to secure a tough conference victory. Proud to start off this season 2-0!

9/11 | Grade 5/6 B Volleyball vs The Oaks Academy | 20-25, 13-25
The Lady Gryphons played a good first set. Unfortunately, they came up short in the second set. The ladies will play the Orchard B team on Friday, September 15th at Orchard.

9/11 | Grade 7/8 B Volleyball vs The Oaks Academy | 20-25, 25-14, 13-15
The Grade 7/8 B Volleyball team battled through a close match against The Oaks Academy. After dropping the first set, the Gryphons bounced back to win the second before falling in a tight third set. Great effort from the team!

9/11 | Middle School Cross Country vs Sycamore School
The ISI Middle School Cross Country teams competed at Sycamore on Friday. Hannah Dollin led the girls with a 5th-place finish in 13:58, while Maxwell Schaefer led the boys, finishing 17th in 14:55. Great work by all of our Gryphons on the course!

9/12 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Bethesda Christian School | 1-5
It was a challenging game against Bethesda Christian School, especially with several players still out due to injuries and being out of state. Despite that, the team stayed together and continued to compete throughout the game. We had some good moments and created opportunities, including our only goal when Liam Hedrick’s shot came back off the post and Remi Dassonville finished the rebound. The result was not what we wanted, but the team continued to compete until the final minutes. We will take what we learned from this game and keep working to get better.

9/12 | Varsity Cross Country vs Ben Davis Invite
From the coach: We saw a lot of great improvement in our second meet, and I’m very happy with how the team competed.
