Athletics Recap - September 14th to 20th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Léo-Paul Perrin | Boys Varsity Tennis
Léo-Paul has had a tremendous season, beginning the season with a flawless streak of matches without dropping a single game. After one of the season’s matches, his opponent’s partner approached the coaches to commend Leo Paul’s sportsmanship - a testament to the respect he earns from both teammates and competitors. While dominant on the court, he continues to demonstrate outstanding leadership through his grace and integrity in play.

9/15 | Grade 5 and 6 Soccer vs Hasten Hebrew Academy | 8-0
Zameer led the Gryphons with a marvelous hat trick in a high-scoring match. When the referee encouraged the team to ease up, our players used the opportunity to practice passing and other skills. The Gryphons showed outstanding sportsmanship, balancing strong play with respect for their opponents.

9/15 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Speedway Senior High School | 5-0
The Gryphons rolled past the Speedway Sparkplugs with a commanding performance. Elias Grimm (1 singles), Michael Kreutz (2 singles), and Leo Paul Perrin (3 singles) all notched dominant victories. Craig Johnson and Jules Dassonville added a strong win at 1 doubles, while Carson McCaslin and Coco Waters secured impressive results in exhibition singles play.

9/15 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball vs Mooresville Christian Academy | 14-25, 23-25
The score does not reflect how well the Gryphon ladies played. This group just continues to get better each game. They are putting to use the skills that are being taught at practice.

9/15 | Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball vs Mooresville Christian Academy | 22-25, 24-26
The team played an excellent game, full of excellent serves, passes, and rallies! Though they didn't win, their respect for and support of each other shined, and they played outstanding. Several people stepped in and blossomed in new roles and positions.

9/16 | Grade 5 and 6 Soccer vs St Richards | 2-2
We ended up tying the game 2-2, after a stellar performance by all the players. This match was won by teamwork, and the students doing a great job listening to coaches and making adjustments throughout the game. The star of the match was Fred, whose grit and extra miles on the pitch gave us the second goal.

9/16 | Grade 7 and 8 Soccer vs St Richards | 7-0
The team played a very strong game overall. With goals from Sam Wade, Liam Hedrick, Teddy White, Austin Howerton, David Rowell, and Levi Boyd (2), players were able to get significant touches and playing time. Our defenders did a job very well keeping the game scoreless.

9/16 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Providence Cristo Rey High School | 23-25, 22-25
Lack of discipline led to a slow start in both sets. Clawed our way back into the game both times but wasn’t enough. Will continue working on communication and efficiency with our front row attacks.

9/16 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Providence Cristo Rey High School | 25-18, 25-27, 25-18, 25-17
Providence had a very scrappy defense, but we managed to find the open spots with our versatile attacking. Our loss in the second set was caused by our lack of focus on serving and serve receiving.

9/16 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Lawrence North High School | 5-0
The Gryphons continued their regular season win streak to 9-0, sweeping Lawrence North on their home courts.

9/17 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs University High School | 2-3
The Gryphons battled in a nail-biting match against a highly talented and decorated University team. Michael Kreutz secured a hard-fought victory at 2 singles in a thrilling three-set showdown (6-4, 1-6, 6-4), while Leo Paul Perrin dominated at 3 singles with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win. At 1 singles, Elias Grimm delivered an impressive three-set performance, ultimately falling just short after being sidelined by severe cramps, but not before showcasing remarkable grit and skill. This was our senior night and we closed out our last home match in celebration!

9/17 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball vs Indiana School for the Deaf | 21-25, 25-23, 15-10
The girls played an outstanding game. They worked hard for every point them scored. The communication and teamwork was spot on. There are 3 regular season home games left and I am so excited to see them play.

9/17 | Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball vs Indiana School for the Deaf | 8-25, 12-25
The Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball team fell to the Indiana School for the Deaf in a very tough game. The team struggled to get a good scoring run going, and will look to rebuild confidence and improve on-court communication for their next game!

9/17 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy | 0-7
This week, we played a tough game against James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy, and unfortunately lost 7–0. Even though the score was not in our favor, we could clearly see the improvement in how our team played and worked together on the field. With only four subs, it was challenging to keep up the intensity for the full match, and fatigue caught up with us. Despite the challenge, our players gave everything they had, and we’ll keep building on the progress we’ve made.

9/18 | Girls Varsity Golf @ PAAC Tournament | +22 (10th place finish)
Liliana wrapped up her season last week with a strong showing at our conference match (tied 10th) and this followed being the medalist of the match against Shortridge with a +21 (57). Congrats to Liliana on a great season and for keeping our girls golf team going these last two years!

9/18 | Grade 5 & 6 Soccer vs Bethesda Christian Schools | 3-4
Yesterday, ISI fell in a close 4–3 match against Bethesda Christian School. The team played shorthanded without starting goalie Ben and striker Fred, but still battled hard until the final whistle. With Coach Penn stepping in to lead most of the sideline communication, the players showed resilience and determination throughout a tough game. Despite the loss, the team is excited to continue growing together and building on the progress they’ve made.

9/18 | Grade 7 & 8 Soccer vs Bethesda Christian Schools | 5-1
While two of our gryphons went down by the end of the game, the team earned a hard-fought victory. Teddy White was the lone scorer of the first half at 1-0, and then Beckett Garry started the momentum early in the second half, which gave the team the confidence to pour in; Teddy Chestefield scored a penalty, and Caden Calarco added two goals. I’m very pleased and proud of the grit the team displayed despite the odds.

9/19 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Indian Creek Sr High School | 3-2
The Gryphons made the long trip to face Indian Creek on Friday. We secured the victory by straight-set victories from Elias Grimm, Michael Kreutz, and Leo Paul Perrin at the singles positions.

9/19 | Grade 5 & 6 Volleyball B Team vs Orchard School | 25-14, 25-14
What a wonderful game! The ISI ladies came out strong and played with incredible energy from start to finish. Their communication and collaboration on the court set the tone, and every player contributed to the win. It was a well-earned victory and a great example of what can be achieved when the team works together.

9/20 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Anderson Preparatory Academy | 5-1
The team did a great job, and it was clear to see the improvement in our play. Our communication on the field was much better, and we connected passes with confidence. Overall, everything came together really well, and the players should be proud of their effort and performance.
