Athletics Recap - April 13th to 19th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Veronica Sabau | Girls Varsity Tennis
Veronica competed in an extremely challenging match in her first outing of the season against an opponent who had already logged five tough matches. After dropping the first set 0–6—a deficit that can be difficult to recover from mentally—she also faced adversity early in the second set.

However, Veronica showed strong composure and resilience, fighting her way back to force a second-set tiebreak, which she won. She carried that momentum into the third-set tiebreak, where she competed with confidence and control to secure the victory.

Overall, Veronica demonstrated impressive mental toughness and perseverance in earning a hard-fought win against a strong opponent.

4/14 | Boys Varisty Volleyball vs Park Tudor | 20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 22-25
The team faced a solid hitting team from Park Tudor on Tuesday. Senior Michael Kreutz fell to an injury and the team had to adjust to a new lineup in the 3rd and 4th sets. Sophomore Elio Coppano and juniors Angus Conley and Matteo Coppano stepped up in the new lineup. It took some time to adjust, and the team's energy was a bit deflated. Senior Léo-Paul Perrin played solid defense in the middle back, and senior Jules Dassonville was a reliable server. The team will move forward, focusing on defense and serving runs. We wish Michael a safe and speedy recovery!

4/16 | Boys Varsity Volleyball vs Providence Cristo Rey | 25-17, 25-23, 25-17
The team had a slow start against a scrappy Providence Cristo Rey team, but fought back from a deficit in the second set for an exciting win. The team built more confidence in the new lineup over time, but will refocus on serving consistency and playing at a high level throughout matches moving forward. Senior Jules Dassonville was once again very consistent with serving, getting multiple aces throughout the match. Freshmen Potter Chen and Mauricio Laguna Almazán made their debut in the third set, both delivering solid serves. Mauricio served the match-winning point.

4/16 | Girls Varsity Tennis vs Roncalli High School | 1-4
The Gryphons opened their season against a seasoned Roncalli team that was already deep into match play. All three singles positions competed hard, highlighted by Lilliana Sanchez at No. 3 singles, who pushed her match to a tightly contested three-set battle. At No. 1 singles, Veronica Sabau showed resilience after dropping the first set 0–6, rallying to win the match 0–6, 7–2 (2), 10–4.

4/18 | Boys Varsity Golf @ The Patriot Open
