Athletics Recap - August 17th to 23rd

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Saul Gonzalo Sanz | Boys Varsity Soccer
Saul has been a standout from start to finish so far this season. His work rate is exceptional, consistently challenging every opponent, playing box-to-box, and giving 100% for all 80 minutes. His soccer IQ is evident in his positioning and decision-making, allowing him to make an impact all over the field. Congratulations, Saul!

8/17 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Beech Grove High School | 1-4
The Gryphons have a small but mighty team this season. After defaulting three singles and two doubles right from the start, the Gryphons battled hard to make it a competitive match against a team of experienced seniors. Potter Chen secured the first win of the season at No. 1 singles, earning a 6–4, 7–5 victory. Wesley Shattuck made his high school tennis debut at No. 2 singles, falling in a hard-fought 3–6, 2–6 match. Coco Waters was joined by fellow debutant Beau Stableford at No. 2 doubles.

8/18 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Brebeuf Jesuit High School | 1-6
The Boys Varsity Soccer Team came out flying and played phenomenal soccer from the opening whistle. After 20 minutes, we were in control, leading 1-0, playing with confidence, composure, and the intensity we’ve been working toward all year.

Unfortunately, one mental lapse allowed Brebeuf to find the equalizer, and from there, the momentum shifted. While the result wasn’t what we wanted, this game was another clear sign of just how far this team has come. We’ve developed into a team that can compete with anyone, and last night was proof of that.

A special shoutout to our goalkeeper, Niels. The final score does not do his performance justice. He was lights out all night, making big saves in 1v1 situations and coming up with difficult stops when we needed him most.

8/19 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Park Tudor High School | 15-25, 24-26, 25-18, 16-25
Varsity's season opener was a 4 set thriller against Park Tudor. In front of an excited home crowd, the team came together and excelled in serving, aggressiveness, and camaraderie. Park Tudor was a tough serving and hitting team, and the Gryphons responded with scrappy defense and finding ways to keep the ball in play. They found ways to bounce back from errors and maintain energy through the long night. Congratulations to freshman Stephanie Chen for a great all-around performance in her first varsity match. Junior Emma Wust Head was adaptable, moving into a setting position, and kept her cool in a competitive match. Juniors Maya Kalgaonkar, Ana Cuevas-Faget, and Yaretzi Mejia-Guevera all went on key serving runs. It was a strong performance in our first match, and a great preview of the season ahead. Congratulations team!

8/19 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Park Tudor High School | 11-25, 13-25
JV lost in a tough match against Park Tudor on Wednesday. They were short a player and had to adapt to different lineups. The team will continue building confidence and rhythm in their lineup moving forward.

8/20 | Girls 5/6 Volleyball A Team vs The Oaks Academy | 24-26, 23-25
The Gryphons came out strong in their first match of the season! While they weren’t able to close out the match, the team battled for every point and made their opponents work for every one. The score may not tell the whole story, but there were plenty of positives to build on. We’re excited to see this team continue to grow and improve throughout the season!

8/20 | Girls 7/8 Volleyball A Team vs The Oaks Academy | 14-25, 8-25
ISI fell to Oaks Academy last night, 14–25 and 8–25. While the result wasn’t what the Gryphons were hoping for, every match is an opportunity to learn, adjust, and improve. The team will use this game to identify areas to focus on in practice and continue working toward becoming a stronger, more confident team. We’re looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow throughout the season! 

8/20 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Park Tudor High School | 0-4
Gryphon fell 0-4 to Park Tudor in a hard-fought match. While the scoreline wasn’t what we wanted, it didn’t reflect the effort, competitiveness, and ability the team showed throughout the game. The team battled from start to finish and continued to compete despite the result. We’ll use this game as motivation to rally during the next stretch of matches, continue improving, and build toward stronger performances as the season progresses.

8/21 | Girls 5/6 Volleyball B Team vs Coram Deo | 24-25, 9-25
The Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball B Team played their first game of the season on Friday! The team played a strong first set, especially considering that many players were new to the sport and experiencing their first game. In the second set, the team continued to show tremendous effort and determination. Although the set did not go as planned and there was not enough time to make a comeback, the players continued to work hard and support one another throughout the game.

8/21 | Girls 7/8 Volleyball B Team vs Coram Deo | 17-25, 25-18, 11-15
The Grade 7/8 Volleyball B Team opened their season Friday with a hard-fought three-set match, falling 17–25, 25–18, 11–15. With many athletes new to the sport, the team showed great effort and growth in their first game. We’re excited to see how they continue to develop throughout the season!

8/22 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs North Putnam Jr-Sr High School | 2-1
ISI earned a strong 2-1 comeback victory over North Putnam. After being down 0-1 at halftime, the Gryphons responded with two goals in the second half. Ronan Lien scored the equalizer, assisted by Saul Gozalo Sanz, before Asher Stevens finished the comeback with the game-winner, assisted by Ronan. This was the Gryphons’ best performance so far this season, highlighted by strong communication, movement, and teamwork.
