Athletics Recap - September 7th to 13th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Zach Aikins | Grade 7 and 8 Soccer
Despite being new to the goalie position, Zach has shown tremendous courage and exceeded all expectations. In every game, he has made critical saves that have kept his team in contention. Zach's willingness to step into an unfamiliar role and rise to the challenge has not only boosted his own confidence but also revealed a natural talent for the position. His growth and determination make him a standout choice for Student-Athlete of the Week.

9/8 | Middle School Tennis vs Sycamore School | 1-4
Everyone is growing and getting better as the year goes on. However, this week, Lauren at 2 singles deserves a shoutout. Lauren had a very tough match where she won in a tiebreak! She showed great perseverance, staying in the match.

9/8 | Grade 7 and 8 Soccer vs Traders Point Christian Academy | 8-0
The 7th/8th grade team saw a lot of action from players this game. Goals by Alex Lee, Austin Howerton, Teddy White, Levi Boyd, Beckett Garry, Zach Aikins, and David Rowell (2) led the gryphons to an 8-0 victory. Job well done overall by the team!

9/8 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Traders Point Christian Academy | 10-2
We played a great game and came out with a big 10-2 win. The team played very well from start to finish, showing good energy, teamwork, and focus. Everyone contributed, and we can see how much we’re improving together on the field.

9/9 | Grade 5 and 6 Soccer vs Sycamore School | 4-2
Our team fell 4–2 on the road at Sycamore, but there were plenty of bright moments. Ben was a rockstar in goal with some incredible saves, while Diego anchored the defense with a clutch stop to deny a sure goal. The players gave it their all, and we’re proud of their effort!

9/9 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Scecina Memorial High School | 5-0
The Gryphons dominated Scecina tonight with a clean sweep. Our singles lineup delivered another stellar performance: Elias Grimm (6-0, 6-0) at #1, Michael Kreutz (6-0, 6-1) at #2, and Leo Paul Perrin (6-0, 6-0) at #3. Doubles secured the sweep in hard-fought matches, with Craig Johnson and Potter Chen winning 6-4, 6-3 at #1, and Jules Dassonville and Carter McCaslin closing it out 6-1, 6-4 at #2.

9/9 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball vs St Richards | 25-23, 20-25, 15-9
The players played an outstanding game. They worked together as a team and communicated well. Each game, they continue to improve.

9/9 | Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball vs St Richards | 8-25, 12-25
The Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball team feel to St Richards in a difficult match. The team will grow from this and continue to put their best foot forward in practice!

9/9 | Girls Varsity Golf vs Indianapolis Shortridge
Liliana shot a +22 (58) and was medalist of the match.

9/9 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Purdue Polytechnic North | 25-15, 25-13, 25-7
9/9 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Purdue Polytechnic North | 25-17, 25-7

Aggressive serving proved to be a recipe for success for both ISI teams. JV and Varsity kept the pressure on with consistent serves that challenged Purdue Broad Ripple throughout the night. Varsity’s focus on versatile attacks and strong communication helped them control the pace of play, turning momentum into a well-executed performance. Both teams continue to build confidence and show growth with every match.

9/10 | Middle School Cross Country vs Orchard School Meet | 5th
We had a good meet at Orchard School. Every runner on the team finished with a season’s best performance - so far! Finishers were Teddy White (7th), Mana Fausel (24th), Cameron White (28th), Max Schaefer (29th), Sebastian Vilatte (35th), and Vedaant Gupta (38th).

9/10 | Middle School Tennis vs Orchard School | 0-5
It was another tough match against a very good opponent in Orchard. Everyone played well and got leads in their matches early, just letting them slip away at the end. Wes played singles for the first time this year and played very well!

9/10 | Grade 5 and 6 Soccer vs Indianapolis Christian School | 0-1
Saffron shined as our MVP on defense, showing that hard work and fun can go hand in hand. Despite a tough 0-1 loss, we’re proud of the team’s effort and spirit, and now we’ll focus on strengthening our offense moving forward.

9/10 | Grade 7 and 8 Soccer vs Indianapolis Christian School | 6-1
The team started off with an early goal from Zayden, and closed out a rough half with a brilliant goal from Beckett Garry to make the score 2-1. After the half, the team played hard-earned soccer with goals from Levi Boyd, Teddy Chesterfield, Liam Hedrick, and Beckett again (with two assists from Zayden and one from Teddy Chesterfield) to finish with a well deserved victory, and the man of the match being Liam Hedrick for his non-stop effort all game. Very proud of how the team rallied for the second half.

9/11 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball vs Orchard School | 12-25, 15-25
The players played a great game, but unfortunately, it didn't go the way we wanted. Their confidence in playing continues to grow with each match, and the students are using the things they are taught in practice and putting them into action.

9/11 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Herron High School | 5-0
The Gryphons improved to 7-0 on the season with a commanding 5-0 sweep over Herron High School. Elias Grimm, Michael Kreutz, and Leo Paul Perrin cruised to straight-set victories, continuing their flawless streak of not dropping a set all year. At No. 2 doubles, Jules Dassonville and Carson McCaslin secured a decisive win, while Craig Johnson and Potter Chen fought through a hard-fought battle at No. 1 doubles, ultimately clinching the sweep in a thrilling third-set tiebreak.

9/11 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Shortridge High School | 3-6
We played a very good game against one of the strongest teams in the conference. Even though we lost, we controlled most of the match and showed great teamwork. Unfortunately, with several injuries and only 3 subs compared to their 11, we ran out of energy in the last 20 minutes, and they were able to score 3 goals. Overall, it was a strong performance, and we should be proud of how well we played.

9/11 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Traders Point Christian School | 25-8, 25-11, 25-12
The Girls’ Varsity Team put on a strong performance with an all-around team effort. Consistent serves, smart offensive plays, and solid defense kept them competitive throughout the match. It was a great showing of teamwork and determination from start to finish.

9/12 | Grade 5 and 6 Soccer vs The Oaks Academy | 0-4
The Grade 5 and 6 Soccer Team faced a tough opponent in The Oaks Academy. While they gave it their all, the team left the game with plenty t improve on inm practice before their next game.

9/12 | Grade 7 and 8 Soccer vs The Oaks Academy | 2-3
The team played some of its best soccer against arguably the toughest team in the league. Liam Hedrick scored in the first half with an assist from Beckett Garry, and Beckett scored in the second half from a free kick. The team did fall to Oaks 3-2, but given the competition and how we played, I have nothing but pride in this match. Job well done to the team.

9/13 | Boys Varsity Tennis @ PAAC Conference | 3rd Place
The Gryphons battled in a tough PAAC conference on Saturday, earning several strong finishes. Leo Paul Perrin placed 3rd at 2 singles, while Craig Johnson and Potter Chen secured 3rd at 1 doubles. Michael Kreutz finished 4th at 1 singles, with Carson McCaslin and Coco Waters taking 4th at 2 doubles.

9/13 | Varsity Cross Country @ Ben Davis Invite
We had a full team for this race and scored our first team score in 3 years as we needed 5 runners. Barrett unfortunately went down with an ankle injury but the remaining five kept it going. Kalyl Ford had a tremendous showing with a 21:13 (6:57 per mile) besting his first race as freshman last week by over 2 minutes. Delano Sanchez fought through let cramps to still finish the race in a respectable 24 minutes. Dennis set a PR with a 22 minute finish and is knocking on the door of 21 minute!
