Athletics Recap - August 17th to 23rd

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Michael Kreutz | Boys Varsity Tennis
Michael is not only an outstanding athlete but also a natural leader on our team. He consistently sets the tone by being the first to cheer for his teammates and by motivating them on the court. In our recent match against Crispus Attucks, Michael faced a first-time player who struggled to return the ball. While securing a decisive victory, he demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship by intentionally structuring points to give his opponent the opportunity to rally and gain experience.

8/18 | Girls Golf vs Ben Davis High School & Tri-West
Liliana kicked off the season with a solid round against Ben Davis and Tri-West, shooting +24 (59). She improved her opening match score from last year by three strokes. Great progress to start the year!

8/18 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Park Tudor High School | 23-25, 8-25, 12-25
The Gryphons dropped their match to Park Tudor 23–25, 8–25, 12–25, but there were encouraging moments to build on. The first set was a strong showing, with the girls competing point for point and keeping the energy high. As the match went on, the team was challenged to maintain that same level of focus and mental fortitude, which is something they’ll continue working on throughout the season. Despite the scoreline, the team is making progress with each game, and the lessons learned from this match will help them grow in consistency and resilience. With their strong start in the opening set, the girls showed what they’re capable of when they play together with confidence. They’re eager to carry that momentum forward and keep improving as the season continues.

8/18 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Park Tudor High School | 8-25, 13-25
In their first match of the season, the JV team fell 8–25, 13–25 to Park Tudor. The girls showed improvement from set one to set two and gained valuable experience to build on. With this first match behind them, the team is looking forward to growing their skills and confidence as the season moves ahead.

8/19 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Providence Cristo Rey High School | 1-7
While the 7–1 score wasn’t the outcome we hoped for, it gave us a valuable look at where we can grow after our first regular-season game. We saw the importance of staying more connected between our defense and midfield to avoid big gaps, and we learned that moving the ball quicker, especially in our own 18, will make things easier on ourselves. Creating more shots and finishing our chances will also be key as we move forward. On the positive side, the team showed great resilience by working hard until the final whistle, and we were rewarded with a well-earned goal built through strong teamwork. This game set a clear direction for what we need to focus on in practice, and we’re excited to keep improving together.

8/19 | Varsity Cross Country @ Ethan Cheeseman Memorial Invite
The Varsity Cross Country team kicked off its 2025 season with a strong performance! Senior Ashwin Long led the way, taking first place out of 49 runners. Sophomore Josh Christie had a top-ten finish, placing ninth. Senior Dennis Lemoine and sophomore Delano Sanchez also had great races, placing 29th and 27th, respectively.

8/20 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Beech Grove High School | 5-0
The Gryphons dominated Beech Grove with outstanding performances across the lineup. Elias Grimm, Michael Kreutz, and Leo Paul Perrin each cruised to decisive victories in their singles matches, winning 6-0, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, Craig John and Jules Dassonville secured a strong 6-2, 6-1 win, while Carson McCaslin and Potter Chen battled through a tight contest at No. 2 doubles, ultimately prevailing 6-4, 6-4. Adding to the team’s success, Coco Waters impressed in his high school debut with a solid singles performance.

8/21 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball vs The Oaks Academy | 17-25, 21-25
With only four practices under their belt, the athletes showed incredible effort and teamwork in their first game of the season. Their performance set a strong foundation to build on, and we’re excited to watch their skills and confidence continue to grow with each game ahead!

8/21 | Grade 7 and 8 Volleyball vs The Oaks Academy | 13-25, 8-25
The girls faced a tough serving team from The Oaks Academy. With minimal practice before their first match, the players encouraged each other and helped each other get to the right spots while playing brand new positions. The team is looking forward to the upcoming matches to continue to grow and click as a team!

8/21 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Park Tudor High School | 0-9
The team played hard and really came together as a unit, especially in the first half. A few mistakes and some soft goals by the other team cost us, but overall, the effort and teamwork were there. Our team is excited to build on this performance to prepare for our next game.

8/21 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Shortridge High School | 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 8-15
8/21 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Shortridge High School | 12-25, 17-25

Following their game earlier in the week, both JV and Varsity went back out last Thursday against Shortridge, and we saw two completely different teams. Every point was played with courage, communication, and game intelligence. We didn't finish either of those matches with a win, but we did accomplish our goal of starting and finishing with the same amount of energy and effort. JV never surrendered and brought everything they've been learning in practice to the game. Varsity battled for the first 4 sets, winning 2 and losing 2. With some of our players having to play both JV and Varsity, 3 of the players ran out of playing time (players only get 5 total sets each night, per IHSAA rules) and we had to do our best in a 5th set without them. Regardless of the result, we finished with pride, hunger, and motivation to work even harder in practices and our future matches. With all 17 players now available, we shouldn't face the same problem of not having enough sets.

8/22 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Crispus Attucks | 5-0
The Gryphons swept Crispus Attucks, facing a very inexperienced team. While the level of play didn’t push our limits, our athletes stood out for their sportsmanship and respect on the court.

8/22 | Grade 5 and 6 Volleyball B Team vs P.A.L. | 9-25, 10-25
Every player gave their best effort in the first game of the season. The team’s determination and teamwork were clear, creating a solid starting point to grow from. We’re eager to see how they continue to develop and shine throughout the season!
