Athletics Recap - May 4th to 10th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Angus Conley | Boys Varsity Volleyball
Angus has become a vocal leader for the team and leads by example with his energy on and off the court. He is new to volleyball this season but is already making good observations about our competitors and shares them with the team. In the past two weeks, things are starting to click for Gus on the volleyball court. He's hitting and blocking more consistently and is aggressive at the net with tight balls and overpasses. With Michael's injury early in the season (we wish him a speedy recovery!), Gus has stepped up as a leader in the huddle. His positive, competitive attitude is much needed and helps lift the team.

4/5 | Boys Varsity Volleyball vs Indy Genesis | 21-25, 16-25, 16-25
The team celebrated Senior Night on Tuesday versus Indy Genesis. They were much improved with their serving and scrappy defense. Genesis has some great hitters, and we stayed in long rallies. The team worked hard, was mentally tough, and enjoyed their time on the court. Afterwards, we celebrated our four seniors and thanked them for their contributions to the volleyball program - Léo-Paul Perrin, Jules Dassonville, Craig Johnson, and Michael Kreutz.

4/7 | Boys Varsity Volleyball vs Crosspointe Christian | 17-25, 19-25, 25-19, 18-25
The team’s energy and focus were up and down throughout this match, letting a lot of outside factors affect play. The Gryphons will come back stronger for their final regular season match Friday versus Beech Grove.

4/9 | Girls Varsity Tennis at PAAC Conference Tournament | 4th
The Gryphons finished 4th out of 6 teams at the PAAC Tournament this past Saturday at Park Tudor after a day of competitive matches and strong individual performances. Leading the way for the Gryphons, Gabby Vergnaud earned a 3rd-place finish at 2 singles. At 2 doubles, sisters Amalia and Catrina Cristea also captured 3rd place, showcasing strong teamwork in a competitive doubles bracket. The team continues to show growth and grit as the season heads into its final stretch.

4/9 | Varsity Track & Field at Pioneer Conference Championships
The Gryphons Track & Field teams turned in another strong performance, highlighted by an incredible school record from Ashwin Long in the 800m with a first-place finish and a time of 2:01.64!

On the boys side, Tucker Congrove led the way with a 3rd-place finish in the 110m hurdles and added points in the 300m hurdles, long jump, and 4x400m relay. The boys 4x400m relay team of Tucker Congrove, Joshua Christie, Ashwin Long, and Dennis Lemione battled to a 6th-place finish, while Joshua Christie added strong performances in both the 100m and 400m. Eric Tang and Delano Sanchez also competed well in distance events, and AJ Rhea represented the Gryphons in the 200m.

For the girls, Sophia White had an impressive meet with a 5th-place finish in the 200m and a top-10 finish in the 100m. Bree Sherrill scored in both throwing events with a 4th-place finish in discus and 7th in shot put, while Miriam Kruetz cleared 4’6” for 4th place in high jump. Maxine McClure Reynolds and Mak Woods also turned in strong efforts on the track for the Gryphons.

Great work by all of our student-athletes as they continue to compete hard and represent ISI with pride! Go Gryphons!

The Middle School Track & Field team had an incredibly rewarding season. From the very beginning, one of the primary goals was to build a close-knit group of athletes capable of competing at a high level in both the PAAC and IISL. More importantly, the coaching staff sought to create a team culture built on support, hard work, and shared success. The athletes embraced that vision and did an outstanding job fostering a positive and competitive environment throughout the season.

After entering the season with a young and relatively inexperienced roster, the ISI Gryphons Girls Varsity Tennis team focused on growth, consistency, and building a strong team culture.

As the season came to a close, the Gryphons reflected on a year defined by more than standings and scores. “This season was defined not only by results, but by the friendships, growth, and memories our team created together,” Bougher said.
