Athletics Recap - August 31st to September 7th

It was another full week of competition for the Gryphons, with our teams showing focus, grit, and school pride across every game and match. Here’s a look at the results from this week in ISI Athletics.

Student Athlete of the Week | Isabel Gutierrez | Grade 5/6 Volleyball
Isabel continues to improve in each practice and each game. She listens to the coaches on what she needs to do and implements the changes. She maintains a positive attitude always and is a good teammate. She is an absolute pleasure to have as a Lady Gryphon volleyball player.

9/1 | Boys Varsity Tennis vs Shortridge | 2-3
The Gryphons battled Shortridge in a close and competitive match. Potter Chen faced a talented opponent from Germany at 1 singles, while Wesley Shattuck ground out a hard-fought win at 2 singles. Coco Waters and Beau Stableford also earned their first win together at 1 doubles. It was a strong showing from the Gryphons and another great opportunity to build momentum.

9/1 | Grade 5/6 A Volleyball vs Sycamore School | 16-25,25-23,13-15
Our Grade 5/6 Volleyball team battled from start to finish against Sycamore! The players did an outstanding job keeping the ball in play and returning it over the net, fighting for every point along the way. After dropping the first set, the team bounced back to take the second and pushed the third set to the final point. Great effort and determination from the entire team!

9/1 | Grade 7/8 A Volleyball vs Sycamore School | 15-25, 19-25
The Lady Gryphons fell short to a consistent Sycamore team in last night’s competition. ISI did their best to stay in the game, but Sycamore kept the team out of rhythm with their consistent play. Both teams take on Bethesda this Friday!

9/1 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Tindley Academy | 25-10, 25-7, 25-3
Varsity put on a solid performance against Tindley on Tuesday. They played to their standard, stayed focused on strong serving, and were ready for anything to come back. Sophomores Anabel Kim, Magdalena Aguilera, Michelle Menya, and Sophia White contributed with some solid reps. Congratulations Gryphons!

9/3 | Grade 5/6 A Volleyball vs Hasten Hebrew | 12-25, 25-5, 15-8
The ladies did an amazing job! They worked together as a team, supported one another, and stayed focused throughout the match. Their hard work, communication, and determination paid off, and they truly earned this win. I’m so proud of the effort they put in and the way they continue to grow and improve as a team. What a great accomplishment!

9/3 | Boys Varsity Soccer vs Herron High School | 5-2
The ISI Gryphons delivered a strong all-around performance, scoring five goals while completing 101 passes throughout the match. Niels Grimm opened the scoring with a well-executed free-kick finish, followed by Beckett Garry converting a penalty kick. Ronan Lien added a third goal, assisted by Beckett Garry. Zen Bailey then scored twice, including a penalty and a brilliant long-range strike from the left half-space from well outside the box. Defensively, Clement Okoth Menya was outstanding throughout the match. His strong positioning, composure, and defensive work helped keep the team organized and limited the opposition’s opportunities. His phenomenal defensive performance earned him Player of the Match honors.

9/4 | Grade 5/6 B Volleyball vs Bethesda Christian | 14-25, 20-25
During the second set, the ladies continued to work hard and showed great determination on the court. They made some really impressive plays, communicated well with one another, and continued to fight for every point. It was exciting to see their hard work and teamwork come together throughout the set. I continue to be incredibly proud of the progress they are making, both individually and as a team. Their confidence, effort, and willingness to keep learning and improving are truly

9/4 | Grade 5/6 A Volleyball vs Bethesda Christian | 7-25, 9-25
Although the final match did not go our way, the score does not reflect how well the ladies played. They showed great effort, determination, and teamwork throughout both sets. We saw some great plays, strong communication, and moments where they really battled for every point. The ladies continued to encourage and support one another, even when things became challenging.

9/4 | Grade 7/8 A Volleyball vs Bethesda Christian | 16-25, 5-25
The Lady Gryphons fell short to a tough serving Bethesda team. The team battled through the first set before losing steam in the second. This was the first time the team had to face such a strong serving team. The Gryphons will be on the road to take on St Richards next Tuesday.

9/4 | Girls Varsity Volleyball vs Waldron Jr-Sr | 18-25, 16-25, 18-25

9/4 | Girls JV Volleyball vs Waldron Jr-Sr | 13-25, 10-25

The Gryphons had a strong showing at the Brownsburg Invite! Joshua Christie led the team with a 20:55 finish, followed by Kalyl Ford at 21:22 and Eric Tang at 23:14. Mana Fausel and Caspar Lemoine rounded out the team, while Bree Sherrill competed in the girls race with a time of 35:20. Great job, Gryphons!
