What is the International School of Indiana’s (ISI) age cutoff?
In line with the Indiana Department of Education, children who turn 5 on or before August 1 of the school year are eligible to start Kindergarten.
Similarly, students who turn 4 on or before August 1 of the school year are eligible to start PreK, and students who turn 3 on or before August 1 of the school year are eligible to start the 3 year old program.*
If you feel as though your child is better suited for a different grade level than their default grade level, you may notify the Office of Admissions at admissions@isind.org. Notifying the Office of Admissions will allow the Pre-Entry Visit facilitators to review in depth your child’s readiness for a particular grade and make a recommendation.
*If your child will turn 3 after August 1 of the school year, you may apply to for them to join once they turn 3, however admission will be subject to available space and careful consideration of classroom dynamics. If your child will turn 3 after December 31, you are encouraged to apply for the following school year. Regardless, all 3 year olds who start during the school year are required to repeat the 3 year old program.
Do students need to be potty trained to start at ISI?
Yes. All students need to be fully potty trained by the time they start at ISI. A fully potty trained child is a child who can do the following:
- Walk to and sit on a toilet independently
- Pull down their pants and pull them up again
- Stay dry and accident free all day including nap time
- Communicate when they need to go to the restroom
Does my child need to have language learning experience? What does support look like?
At the Lower School, a learning support specialist is able to provide academic learning support. Learning support specialists are equipped to provide language support, classroom teachers are equipped to provide limited learning support, and a counselor is equipped to provide social and emotional support and more extended learning support, when appropriate. If your child has any health or educational needs of which we should be aware, please don’t hesitate to share them with us. In partnership with you, we want to ensure ISI is equipped to meet their needs and set them up for success.

What is the Parent Portal?
Where can I get more information about Parent Portal?
Parent Portal has a great parent support page (https://schooladmin.com/parent-portal-help/)
What if I have completed a checklist item; however, it's still showing pending on my student’s file?
While items are normally updated within 24 to 48 hours, please allow up to a week for all documentation to be uploaded. If you are uncertain or if it’s time sensitive, feel free to contact the admissions office at admissions@isind.org or 317-923-1951 Ext 334 to talk with one of our team members.
What is a Pre-Entry Visit and what skills are being assessed during the visit?
As part of the admissions process, all applicants 3 years old through Grade 1 are required to complete a Pre-Entry Visit. A Pre-Entry Visit is a 45-minute play-based assessment during which facilitators are looking at the following:
Is the child able to:
- Separate from parents without stress?
- Show self-control over emotions?
- Handle transitions quietly/smoothly?
- Follow directions?
- Clean up his/her toys?
- Play within a group?
- Take turns/share toys?
- Follow activities?
- Work independently?
- Stay focused working on a task?
- Speak with an understandable speech?
- Answer simple questions?
- Express needs or feelings in an appropriate way?
- Show independence when eating?
- Use the restroom independently?
Successful completion of these tasks does not guarantee admission. Similarly, inability to complete these tasks does not preclude admission. Simply, assessment of these tasks is used to gauge fit and readiness for a school environment/language-based program.
We live out of state or out of country. Is there a substitute for the Pre-Entry Visit / Shadow day requirement?
As an international school, we recognize that many of our prospective families live out of state or out of country. For Lower School applicants, the Office of Admissions is able to tentatively waive the Pre-Entry Visit / Shadow requirement, but may request a virtual evaluation in the case that more information is needed. In some cases, this requirement can be waived completely.

What is a multi-age classroom?
Multi-age classrooms, also referred to as mixed-age or mixed-grade classrooms, are classrooms where students learn and grow together across more than one grade level. Multi-age classrooms include groups of students that have an age span greater than one year. ISI utilizes multi-age classrooms in our Early Years Program for students age 3 until they reach Kindergarten.
Why multi-age, and what are some of the benefits?
ISI and the IB embrace a child-centered and exploratory learning approach that actively involves children in the curriculum through genuine learning experiences. Recognizing that each student develops and learns at their own pace, IB schools have experienced success with multi-age classrooms that prioritize the holistic growth of every child and enable flexible and customized instruction. Within a multi-age classroom, children are provided with a secure and supportive environment to cultivate both academic and social-emotional skills. By emphasizing collaboration, nurturing leadership qualities, and implementing an inquiry-based curriculum, we aim to equip children with the necessary tools to actively contribute and flourish in their learning.
What will class sizes and teacher to student ratios look like in multi-age classrooms?
Will my student be with the same classmates/teacher for two years?
Each year teachers and administrators will look at each cohort and create balanced classes that help support learning. While we may want a child to stay with a teacher for two years, there are times when it might be preferable for a student to learn from a new teacher or have different classmates. Having multi-age classroom options allows flexibility in student placement.
How do you determine who will be in what class?
The placement process at ISI will consider many aspects of a child’s situation while determining class placement; academic, social-emotional, personality, friendships, age, and connections. Placements will be made with the goal of creating classroom communities that are simultaneously balanced and diverse.
Can I request a specific teacher?
The academic team is responsible for creating cohorts each academic year. Parents are welcome to give their input, but the ultimate decision is left to the Lower School Principal. If parents would like to request a specific teacher, they should contact the Lower School Principal. If the principal is able to make the accommodation, they will do so with the academic team at the end of the year. While ISI works to maintain consistency in the teaching staff and grade level assignments, teachers are on annual contracts and may move grade levels between academic years.
How are the standards and curriculum met for both grade levels in a multi-age classroom?
The IB scope and sequence for each area of the curriculum is divided into four phases. While the phases do not correspond to grade levels, we do find most early learners are in phase one of their development. Currently we have students in a very broad range of development with age specific classrooms. A few months' age difference in the life of an early learner can make a large difference in the benchmarks they are able to achieve. As we currently do, children who are ready for more challenging work will have the opportunity to learn at their own pace. Students who need more support will not only learn from their teachers but also from their peers.
How does language learning work in multi-age classrooms?
Multi-age classes are very good for language learning. Children learn so much from each other. When students who are familiar with the language mix with students who are new to the language, teachers have to do less explaining of directions and routine because the younger children will follow what the older students model - allowing more time for meaningful activities and hands-on learning. If children have a good relationship with their teacher and stay with the same teacher for two years, there is a more emotional bond between the student and teacher. This lowers the affective filter (Krashen) and allows students to feel comfortable practicing the language. The older students are also very eager to teach the younger students what they know.
Will the older and gifted students be challenged in a multi-age classroom?
Yes. A multi-age classroom presents a complex setting that offers advanced students enhanced opportunities, such as assuming leadership positions. When given the chance to instruct their younger peers, students demonstrate a heightened comprehension level. Research indicates a significant improvement in the academic performance of older students who teach their younger classmates. It is important to note that being older or gifted does not necessarily imply being socially and emotionally advanced. By participating in a multi-age community, students gain the opportunity to learn from and alongside peers who may possess social and emotional strengths, regardless of their age.
Will my student be learning repeated information if they are in the same classroom for two years?
No, the curriculum will cycle every two years. Students who complete two full years in the early years program will complete 8 unique units of inquiry (four per academic year). The Units of Inquiry will be modified to be age appropriate for all students in the multi-age classroom. The only time a student will learn repeated information is if the decision is made to have a student attend a third year in the program.

Rest time
All pre-elementary students have nap/rest time built into their day, and are asked to bring supplies for nap time (crib-sized blanket, travel sized pillow, small stuffed animal or toy for comfort during rest time).
We recognize that as students age, they may age out of naps. In these cases, students must rest and/or play quietly.
Wait Pool
- What is a wait pool?
- What is the likelihood that my child will be offered a place at ISI?
- How will I be notified and how much time will I be given once my child is offered a place?
- What if I’m offered a place and want to take it but have signed a contract at another school?
- What happens if my student is not accepted from the wait pool?
- Can I choose another language track if my student is in the wait pool?
What is a wait pool?
At the International School of Indiana when a class reaches capacity, new students who have been accepted for that class will be offered a place in the wait pool. When space becomes available the admissions committee considers many factors when selecting an applicant from the wait pool, such as gender balance, siblings already enrolled at ISI, socio-economic diversity, cultural diversity and family match.
What is the likelihood that my child will be offered a place at ISI?
How will I be notified and how much time will I be given once my child is offered a place?
You will receive a telephone call, followed by a confirmation email. Unfortunately, the admissions committee will only be able to give a family a limited time period to accept a place. We encourage families to ensure they are prepared to respond quickly and have considered financial costs and any other implications that may arise in making this decision.
What if I’m offered a place and want to take it but have signed a contract at another school?
What happens if my student is not accepted from the wait pool?
If you are still interested in pursuing a space for your student for the following school year, you should contact the admissions office in the fall to discuss your application. You will not need to submit another application but may need to update some of the admissions checklist requirements e.g. teacher recommendations, school records, attend the pre-entry visit or shadow day.
Can I choose another language track if my student is in the wait pool?
You may choose another language track in the same grade level if spots are available. If you would like to revise your language track choice, the Admissions Committee can confirm admission within the week to secure your student's seat in the alternate track. If you choose this option, you can still remain in the wait pool for your preferred language.

What is the ISI Homestay Program?
International students seeking to extend learning beyond the classroom can enroll in the ISI Homestay Program. The program, which very few other U.S. secondary-education institutions directly offer, matches international students with Indianapolis-area families to provide a residence for the students during the 10 months of the academic year.
Host families are members of the ISI school community - teachers, staff, alumni families, and current families - who are interested in sharing U.S. culture & traditions with international students.

Underscoring our commitment to cultivating a diverse school community, ISI allocates more than $2 million annually to financial aid.
Does ISI Participate in the Choice Scholarship Program (Voucher)
Yes, ISI participates in Choice for Kindergarten through Grade 12 students. Vouchers are not available at ISI for 3 year old or pre-kindergarten students.
Vouchers offset only part of the cost of tuition at ISI. Voucher applications are made by ISI to the State on behalf of eligible families.
To learn more about the Choice Scholarship Program at ISI and how it works with financial aid, click here.
What services are included in tuition costs?
Tuition INCLUDES many costs related to a successful education at ISI:
- lunch services
- some classroom supplies
- local field trips

Should there be any changes to the contract they would be announced in January, prior to the enrollment refresh period, too. The information is posted to the school’s website and shared with families via email notification.
Are payment plans available?
If a family is unable to pay the tuition balance at once, payment plans can be utilized to budget payments in smaller installments throughout the academic year.
Beginning the 2024-2025 academic year the following installment plans are available to families with accounts in good standing:
- a semi-annual installment
- a 10-month plan
Parents/guardians have the ability to request a payment plan from the Billing Office and installment schedule.
What if our family has a change in financial circumstances?
Should a change in financial circumstance occur that impacts a family's ability to pay tuition, immediately contact representatives in the Business Office at billing@isind.org, who will work to help resolve concerns and develop a new payment plan that will work for all parties involved.
Is there a penalty for withdrawing our student(s) early?
The Enrollment Refresh Period for enrolled Students takes place from February 1-March 1. Enrolled students who withdraw during this period have no continued tuition obligation for the next academic year.
If a student withdraws after this date the following applies:
- Before June 1 - 10% of annual tuition set forth in the Tuition Schedule.
- June 2 to the 1st day of school - 25% of annual tuition set forth in the Tuition Schedule.
- On or after 1st day of school - 100% of annual tuition set forth in the Tuition Schedule.
The School may, in its sole discretion, waive the above provision and pro-rata amounts owed in the following cases, provided that Parents provide the School with satisfactory documentation evidencing the following:
- The Student permanently moves out of the State of Indiana;
- Parents suffer financial hardship due to a loss of income relied upon to pay tuition; or
- There is a mutual agreement that the Student’s needs may be better met in another educational environment.
Please see sections 4 and 5 of the enrollment agreement.
What is the difference between tuition and fees?
Tuition and Fees are separate line items on your invoice.
Families receive invoices for fees as they are incurred.
Fees include:
- New student admission Fee (one-time fee)
- Study Abroad (Exchange) Trip Fee
- Administrative Fees
- Tutoring
- Graduation Fees
- Testing Fees
- Additional line items you will have through the year:
- Child Care
- Athletic Fees
When will I receive my first tuition bill for the upcoming school year?
First invoices are delivered in June prior to the start of each school year. Your billing cycle and payment will vary based on the payment plan selected on your enrollment and/or ACH form. If you’re making a payment by check or credit card, you will need to make payment prior to the start of the school year (your bill will provide a specific due date).
What deposit and/or fees are required to confirm my student’s enrollment?
All new students are required to pay a one-time new student fee to confirm their enrollment at ISI.
Current families pay a Tuition Deposit that is applied to their annual tuition.
All families are required to pay the first month's tuition payment prior to the first day of school. See the tuition and fee schedule for the most up-to-date information.
What if I believe there is an error reflected on my invoice?
Potential billing errors should immediately be brought to the attention of the ISI Business Office at billing@isind.org.
Can I access invoices issued or paid before June 1, 2024?
Finalsite Enrollment Billing will reflect current and past invoices and payments for any transaction made on or after May 8, 2024. Families who need access to invoice or payment records made before May 8, 2024, should contact the Business Office at billing@isind.org to request those records.

How do I enroll on auto-pay?
What payment types are accepted?
When is my payment due?
Payment schedules may differ based on individual payment plans; however, regardless of the determined payment date, all invoices must be resolved by the due date.
Parents would have selected their preferred payment date during the enrollment process. Payment on all invoices is due 30 days from the date they are sent. During the year, if your financial circumstances change, please notify the Business Office immediately. Failure to do so could result in late fees.
What if my account becomes past due?
The Business Office can work to create a payment plan (see Tuition & Fees section) to bring the account current. However, there may also be circumstances when an account must be turned over for collection by a third party.
You should communicate with the Business Office as soon you become aware of any reason(s) for concern. Please note that late payments are subject to a 1.5% interest charge per month (see Administrative Fees for more information).
What should I do if I need to change my payment method?
What are the convenience fees associated with each payment method?
Convenience fees for credit card payments are 3% per transaction. There are no convenience fees for ACH or check payments. However, it is the responsibility of the payer to ensure checks are received by the payment due date. Late fees will be assessed for check payments that are received after their due date.
How do I make my tuition deposit or pay my new student fee?
New students will receive an invoice three to five business days after completing the enrollment contract. Returning students will receive an invoice in February and payment is due by March 1.
Invoices will be issued on Finalsite Enrollment. Each ISI student has at least one parent/guardian set up as an authorized payer. Authorized payers will be notified of all bills with an email notification from Finalsite.
Evergreen Enrollment
- What is Evergreen Enrollment?

What is Evergreen Enrollment?
What is the Enrollment Refresh Period?
I am enrolling more than one child. Do I need to sign an Evergreen Enrollment Contract for each one?
I’m not sure if we are committed to stay through high school. What if our family needs to make a change?
If your situation changes and you wish to make a change the contract provides provisions to withdraw. The Annual Enrollment Refresh Period for enrolled students will take place from February 1 to March 1. Enrolled students who withdraw during this period will have no continued tuition obligation for the next academic year. This does not apply to new students.
Examples of reasons for departure during a school year:
- The student permanently moves out of the state of Indiana;
- Parents suffer financial hardship due to a loss of income relied upon to pay tuition; or
- There is a mutual agreement that the Student’s needs may be better met in another environment.
What if I am not ready to make my final decision by March 1?
ISI maintains a wait pool when there are more enrollments than places available within a grade level or language track. Families who do not enroll or re-enroll by the published deadlines risk being placed in the wait pool.
To request an extension, please submit an email to the Registrar titled “Enrollment Extension Request” at registrar@isind.org. Please include the reason for the request, and a member of the enrollment team will follow to provide next steps. Extensions must be approved by the Head of School.
How do I know my enrollment was processed and our position is secured?
You will know you have completed enrollment and your position is secured when you receive a thank you email confirming your enrollment.
For starters, everyone enrolls because of our new Evergreen Enrollment process, but there is some behind-the-scenes processing before first-time families receive their confirmation email. Step one is to complete the enrollment process through our Finalsite Enrollment system. Once that’s done, Finalsite Enrollment will send you a confirmation and initiates the process with our billing office. You will get an invoice within 3 to 5 days from Finalsite Billing. Once your enrollment contract has been submitted, and your deposit has been paid, your enrollment is complete for the next school year.
What if I have enrollment issues and believe I completed it, but I did not receive a confirmation email?
Click on the enrollment link in the original enrollment email, and make sure the Enrollment Contract checklist item is not present. If it is still present, there is something not yet completed.
Before clicking submit, make sure all of the fields with a red asterisk have been completed because they are required.
Can I enroll after the priority enrollment deadline of March 1?
Will my enrollment be secured if I am unable to pay my new student fee or tuition deposit at this time?
