Unit Two Wrap-Up

Primary Years Programme (PYP) students at the Lower School are finishing their second unit of the school year! The PYP units are built around transdisciplinary themes that are relevant to all students and cultures. The units are supported by knowledge, concepts, and skills from traditional subject areas such as math, social studies, science, and language arts, but utilize them in a transdisciplinary model.

On November 19, Grade 4 students participated in one of the most popular end of unit celebrations at ISI: the Business Fair! Students spent the unit learning about businesses and how they operate, eventually building their own businesses and products. Each student created a product to sell using recycled or repurposed materials, made a business and marketing plan, and conducted in-class market research about their product. The Business Fair also helped students learn more about math, specifically revenue, expenses, and budget planning.

The central ideas for Unit 2 in each grade are:
3 Year Old: How the World Works - We use our senses to explore and experience the world around us.
Pre-Kindergarten: Who We Are - My family is unique and special.
Kindergarten: Sharing the Planet - Our choices affect the environment around us.
Grade 1: Sharing the Planet - We use natural resources in many useful ways.
Grade 2: Sharing the Planet - Caring for animals and protecting their habitats ensures the wellbeing of our ecosystems.
Grade 3: Sharing the Planet - Water is a natural resource essential to life, so we must use it responsibly.
Grade 4: How We Organize Ourselves - Businesses arise and evolve to meet the needs of the community.
Grade 5: How We Organize Ourselves - Government systems are responsible for making decisions that impact its society.

To celebrate a successful end to the second unit, families were invited to join their students in a variety of activities, including song recitals, presentations, and other hand-on activities to support and celebrate their student’s learning.
