On August 25, International School of Indiana (ISI) seniors completed their Biology Internal Assessment. The Internal Assessment is an independent, student-designed lab which lasts an entire school day. The first month of the school year is spent preparing for this assessment, which builds on concepts and skills learned throughout the high school experience at ISI. The Internal Assessment is designed to challenge students to plan, carry out, and evaluate an investigation.

Since the school year began on August 10, students have taken time to plan their experiment, decide what to test, and think through the logistics and needed materials. The seniors also had opportunities to learn how to use new technology if needed for their experiment. Instructors were available to talk through individual plans and provide guidance when requested. With the supplies from the ISI lab, students are able to pursue a wide range of experiments.

During the first part of lab day, students spent their time setting up their experiment, running tests, and collecting data. They were able to work on skills such as remaining thorough and careful with measurements, timing, and attention to detail.

In the afternoon, students spend time analyzing their results and drafting their reports. The seniors are able to draw conclusions from their experiments and produce a formal lab report of their findings.

The Diploma Programme Biology courses focus on a wide range of subjects, from metabolic reactions to ecosystems. The courses provide opportunities to design investigations and complete hands-on research, utilizing the science lab as well as simulations and databases.
