Season Recap: Middle School Tennis

The ISI Middle School Athletic Program serves as a great opportunity for students to try a new sport. With the cancelation of the Fall 2020 season, the Middle School Co-Ed Tennis team welcomed many new athletes who had never played a match before.

With so many new players, Head Coach Gregory Motteron set goals for the season: allow ISI players opportunities to gain match experience, for players to discover the fun of competition, to create an encouraging team spirit, and to foster a culture that allows the student athletes to have fun amidst the competition.

“So far, the greatest achievement of the team is to have been able to gain experience and see that players now have more strategic knowledge when they play,” Motteron said.

The Middle School Tennis season was scheduled to allow students to play the same teams twice throughout the fall. This allowed the players to pick specific skills to work on and directly compare results.

“During this season I learned that it is more important to improve than to win,” Grade 7 student Estelle Debes said. “When I got to play the same person twice, I was more focused on winning more points than I did last time instead of beating them.”

The Middle School Tennis Team finished with a record of 2-3, as the team continued to build skill and experience for the following years.
