Season Recap: High School Cross Country

After sitting on the sidelines because of the canceled 2020 season, the High School Cross Country team returned for the 2021 season with a new Head Coach, and motivated athletes, ready to come back stronger.

“As a new coach for the athletes this year, my first goal was to help each individual build on previous running experiences in a manner that not only supported faster completion times but also enjoyment in the sport,” Coach Jared Johnson said. “Secondly, I introduced the team to weekly weight training to supplement the running we did on the other days. I believe in the evidence that weight training provides not only strength gains, but also efficiency and less injuries.”

With the addition of weight training, the athletes pushed their abilities to new levels with each runner setting consecutive season personal records three races in a row.

“My biggest goal for the season was to come out much stronger and faster than previous years,” Grade 11 runner Isabella May said. “Coach Johnson chose a variety of workouts throughout the week which helped us with endurance and speed work. He helped all of us achieve our goals and much more.”
