At the International School of Indiana, we see our multicultural makeup as an asset and respect for differences as integral to our mission. Our school was created in part to offer Indiana parents a distinct educational program for their children, one combining a demanding curriculum with foreign language fluency, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for diversity. We are committed to creating a fair and inclusive environment for all and believe a safe school environment enables our students to learn, explore, and grow as compassionate, caring members of our community.
The ten attributes in the IB learner profile provide inspiration and aspiration to help members of our school community recognize, “I am a part of making sure everyone feels safe and comfortable here.

The International School of Indiana honors the uniqueness of each student and employee,

belonging, and fostering creative, culturally aware, global citizens. We equip our students with

Students at ISI are International Baccalaureate students. An IB student strives to be:

PROGRESS AT ISI

In the summer of 2020, ISI took deliberate steps and identified immediate priorities to ensure that our vision of creating a fair and inclusive environment for all at ISI would be possible. Since then, our actions have been deliberate, but they are also ongoing because the work of creating and nourishing a culture is ongoing. As we continue to seek opportunities for growth, for open and honest communication, and for transformative, real-world learning experiences for the betterment of ourselves and those around us, we will provide a summary of our continuing progress on this page.

In partnership with the Board of Directors, the ISI Leadership Team will incorporate DEI efforts into the ISI Strategic Plan. ISI will commit to working on ongoing DEI efforts and action steps.

ISI will form an initial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force that invites faculty, staff, students, board members, parents, and senior leaders to volunteer their time to participate in weekly touch points throughout the school year.

Note: At the conclusion of the 2020-2021 academic year, we were fortunate to enjoy a record-high retention rate in our faculty and staff, with fewer available positions.

Create and distribute community-wide surveys regarding DEI efforts at ISI to our faculty, staff, students, and parents.

Analyze and compile survey results, and invite ISI parents to participate in focus groups hosted by our external DEI consultant to probe further into opportunities to improve the experiences of students and families.

Equity and Positioning statements to be created and presented to employees and board members in advance of the school year, an essential first step in aligning all school leaders toward a shared vision for ISI.

Form a new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force for employees.

During the 2021-2022 academic year, all employees will receive ongoing DEI training, through a five-part training series facilitated by the DEI consultant.

Launch the Gryphon Growth Program, a holistic approach to helping US students take care of themselves and each other. The program is intended to build skills to balance the academic, social, behavioral, and emotional aspects of their lives. Key areas in the 2021-2022 program include understanding bullying, stereotypes, coping skills, stress management, how to advocate for self and others, civil discourse, valuing differences, and respect for differing perspectives.

ISI will review the Student Discipline policy to determine how we can improve our policies and our work with students who do not adhere to our standards of conduct. Once we have completed this review and made any necessary changes, we will share this with our community.

ISI will launch a review of personnel and resources needed to dramatically enhance our ability to care for each student’s well-being. Review of current administrative responsibilities, areas of expertise of each administrator, assessment of further needs. Immediate reassignment of some duties based on capabilities of our current team.

ISI will issue a request for proposals from consulting firms to provide a thorough assessment of the culture at ISI, as it exists, currently. A firm will be selected this winter to conduct an assessment this spring, and provide recommendations to leadership.

ISI will communicate more regularly with internal audiences including current/alumni families and employees about our action plan and progress and provide transparency for external audiences on a new dedicated web page.

ISI will re-launch the Head of School’s listening tour, focused on a discussion about our campus culture, providing an opportunity for parents, employees, students, and alumni to share their experiences and ideas.

ISI will commit to an action plan for 2022-2023 academic year, informed by assessments, constituent feedback, and strategic priorities.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Listening Tour begins February 1, 2022

The Head of School’s listening tour returns in February providing opportunities for parents, students, employees, and alumni to share their thoughts on the culture at ISI. Tour dates will be published to the ISI Community Calendar and community members will receive invitations to participate via email. Stay Tuned!
