As part of their second unit of inquiry “Water is Life,” Grade 3 students are collecting water purification tablets or personal water filtration system (such as LifeStraw). These tablets will be sent to Puerto Rico. The students’ goal is to collect 1000 water purification tablets!
Over the weekend, Grade 3 Mandarin student, Marshall, put her learning to action and had an idea to set up a lemonade stand outside her house to raise additional money to buy the water purification tablets for Puerto Rico. She invited other third grade Mandarin students who live nearby to join in. Marshall, Ellie, Zoe and Kate spent close to six hours selling lemonade and cookies to passersby and told them about the ISI project to purchase and ship water purification tablets. At the end of the day, they had raised over $400 to buy tablets.
They did a great job putting both the unit of inquiry and the International Baccalaureate learner profile to use.
If you are inspired by the work of Marshall, the Lower School will be collecting additional water tablets to send with Marshall’s during the Hispanic Heritage assemblies – Friday, October 27th in the morning at 49th or the afternoon at Blackwell.
Water purification tablets may be purchased at Dick’s Sporting Goods, in the “camping section” of any grocery store such as Target, Meijer, Walmart or Amazon.com
