WHO WE ARE: An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of every PYP school and student. The Exhibition is an opportunity for students reaching the end of the PYP curriculum to synthesize the essential elements of the PYP and share them with the whole school community. In conducting research and communicating it to the entire ISI community, this is also an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile that they have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP.
In the final year of the PYP, the Exhibition represents one of the students’ units of inquiry. Students are required to engage in a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry process that involves identifying, investigating, and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems. The central idea they select must be sufficient in scope and significance to warrant a detailed investigation by all students.
The Exhibition serves a number of key purposes:
• To ask students to engage in in-depth, collaborative inquiry;
• To provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning;
• To provide students with an opportunity to explore multiple perspectives on an issue;
• To allow students to apply the skills they developed throughout the PYP and to reflect upon their educational journey;
• To provide an authentic process for assessing student understanding;
• To demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning;
• To unite the students, teachers, parents, and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience that incorporates the essential elements of the PYP;
• To celebrate the transition of learners from the PYP to the Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Unlike other units of inquiry in the PYP, in the Exhibition it is students – not teachers – who lead the planning, development, and presentation of their unit and work.
Teachers kicked-off the PYP Exhibition in December with a workshop and celebration. Students worked together to brainstorm the transdisciplinary theme “Who We Are” and explored possible ideas around this theme. They bonded over the prospect of collaborating on the Exhibition project with some team-building activities.
In January, each student researched and submitted three idea proposals, based on his/her interests. Based on these proposals, students were organized into 11 trilingual groups, each focusing on a central idea and 3 lines of inquiry. The students will collaborate and present their findings at the Exhibition on June 6 in the Blackwell gymnasium. They will be supported by their teachers and Exhibition mentors, whose task will be to help them find and connect with resources, conduct research and organize their ideas, and find the best ways to present their findings to the ISI community. Be an Expert Mentor
A fantastic way to help with the Exhibition is to volunteer one hour of your time to help students in the areas of: research, public speaking, technology (filming, film editing, website design, etc), and anything related to… dreams!
How Parents Can Help
• Understand the purpose and requirements of the Exhibition;
• Support and encourage students and teachers throughout the process of inquiry;
• Stay informed by reading newsletters, attending meetings, checking school websites, talking with students;
• Help students access resources in support of their research: people, places, media, and information;
• Provide expert subject knowledge where applicable;
• Act as mentors as required or appropriate;
• Encourage independent inquiry and respect student ownership of the process;
• Reflect on and give feedback on the Exhibition;
• Celebrate with the students by attending the staging of the Exhibition.
