Frequently Asked Questions

What athletic facilities do you have at ISI?

ISI has a full-sized gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and physical education at the 4330 N. Michigan Road campus. We also have an eight-lane track, an international sized soccer field, and a soccer and lacrosse practice field. Our 49th Street building has a gymnasium for basketball and physical education.

What are the most popular sports at ISI?

Currently they are Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis and Swimming.  Cross Country. Basketball, Lacrosse and Track & Field are gaining in popularity!

When can my son/daughter begin to participate in athletics at ISI?

Grade 5 is when we begin team competition, but we will have some camps and clinics available for younger aged children.

Is there an athletic participation fee? Yes. For the 2010-2011 academic year:

  • Athletic Participation Fee (Grades 5 – 8) - $125 per student/per sport
  • Athletic Participation Fee (Grades 9 – 12) - $150 per student/per sport
  • Athletic Kit Fee (Grades 5 – 12) – Varies per student
This fee is applied toward costs for entry fees, officials, transportation, equipment and awards and is charged to the family’s school account.

What other expenses could we expect if our child participates in athletics at ISI?

ISI provides the basic team uniforms, but in some sports a separate kit or equipment fee is charged for items that an athlete will use.  Examples include practice t-shirts, shoes, socks, and kneepads.  The "kit" fees range from $30 to $100 for high school sports, and each athlete keeps these items at the end of the season.

Does my son/daughter need to know how to play a sport before joining a team at ISI?

Though it is helpful if a child knows something about the sport they are interested in playing, it is not essential. Part of our philosophy at ISI is to teach and develop all of our young athletes, even those with limited knowledge and skill. This is another reason for our "no-cut policy" and why we attempt to hire the best teacher-coaches in their fields of expertise. We have a wide range of skill levels amongst the children who participate.

Does my child need a Physical Exam before participating?

Yes. All middle school and high school athletes must get a physical each year after May 1st prior to participating in athletics. ISI hosts a "physical night" in May with the cooperation of St. Vincent's Hospitals for $20. This is a service to our families and athletes.

Where do the Tennis teams practice?

Currently our middle school and high school tennis teams practice and compete at the Meridian Hills Country Club and the Broadmoor Country Club.

How do our children get to off-site practices and competitions?

When possible we transport our athletes to practices and competitions on a school-owned bus or van, or on a variety of rental vehicles. We also often arrange car-pooling through parents for some of our larger teams.

What are the ISI School Colors?

Navy Blue, Orange and White

What is the School's Mascot?

The Gryphon (mythological part beast, part bird) - Several spellings used for the same creature, which is a small example of our school's commitment to diversity.
